I killed my first turkey with a full choke. The next year I put a undertaker choke in my gun and couldn't hit crap with it? I know a lot of people use turkey chokes, but how many of you just shoot a full choke?

I was just wondering if you are patterning the shotgun with your turkey choke on. Definately a must as a turkey choke would make you shoot a smaller pattern in many cases making it more critical to pattern the gun. Best of all would be the addition of a red dot or similar shotgun scope. And yeah i know with 3 1/2 inch shells patterning can be somewhat of a sore experience!;)

I am shootin a benelli 12ga.,28 inch with the kicks .665 which adds about another inch or so and at 60 yards with winchester supreme xtended range # 4 shot ,delivers plenty of pellets in the kill zone. That being said this setup is for those 3-4 year old toms that usually end up 50-60 yards from any good cover. But if I am chasing them through the thick stuff and shoot at 20 yards or less,I aim a little right of the head if not it would be a two piece dinner to go!Wouldnt trade this setup for nothing...good luck with your choke.

Suthrn,
I shot my gun at targets with the undertaker, and couldn't hit em as well as i could with a regular full choke. I hunt with a browning gold hunter, it didn't like the turkey chokes.

I shoot a Mossberg 500 with Mossberg extra-full turkey choke in it. It does great. I would say one thing about shooting just a full choke. Winchester is now making a Supreme Extended range shell that I've heard greatly increases your guns pattern range. They're a little pricey at 30-40 dollars a box, but if they do what I've heard, they may be worth the money. I normally try to get the longbeards within 20-30 yards anyway, so I'm not too concerned about whether I can kill a bird all the way out to 65 yards.

Guess your doin the right thing then bud with finding what works best for your particular setup. I had never hunted turkeys with anything but a full choke until this year and ive always taken my limit or at least most of the time. Didnt take a single bird in this state last year but i did manage to call in 4 other birds for my grandpa and boss.

That would be me. I have always hunted with just a full choke, and only missed one bird. My 870 shoots great with a full choke, so I though why change it:confused: My last and biggest bird was killed at 44 yards dead as a hammer, so I did something right.

to clear something up, I wasn't shooting the Undertaker choke from my browning gold hunter. I put it on my dads gun.

I have always shot a full choke, I shoot a Benelli Nova and have killed 14 and never missed one. Granted I probably won't shoot at one much over 40 yds. but pullin 'em in that last 15 or 20 yards is the fun/sometimes painful part!

I usually shoot a 870 w/at factory turkey choke but last year I killed my second bird at 50 yds with just a full choke in my SBE II. Shooting 3 inch fed. #6's.

I'd say more turkeys have been killed with a full choke and 2 3/4 inch #6 shot than anything else. It's only been in recent years that we think we have to have the super tight choke with some kind of high priced shells to kill a turkey. Heck the turkey was almost hunted to extinction with these non modern set ups.

Great point wildman. I'll stick with my regular full choke.

I shoot a Benelli Super Black eagle II with a 28" barrel and a full choke my dad shoots a Benelli Super Black eagle witha 26" barrel! He uses a turkey choke and I use a full choke! Last year was tough our birds stayed henned up all season the gobbler i was hunting still had 12 hens with him all day the last day of the season but i had 2 jakes come in the last day but a hen cut across the field in front of them at 88 yards and they turned to follow her i knew it was as close as i was gettin last year so i shot and it dropped right there flopped a couple times and was done!! I know it was a lucky shot and prolly wouldnt happen again but u know i gotta brag a little!!! LOL!!! and my dad shot a 24 lb 11 inch beard at 30 yards it dropped and got back up and he had to shoot it again, and broke its wing, he was gonna have it mounted but our taxidermist said with a broken wing he couldnt mount it strutting or gobbling so dad decided to wait for another big one!!
I hunt with open cylinder choke, which is no choke at all. It's a 20 ga. flintlock and to get decent patterns you have to adjust the load column. Which means fool with different amount of powder, shot and different type wads..etc. I can get good patterns out to just under 30yds.

I also shoot a Benelli Nova with a Mad Calls Mad Maxx choke and it is awesome. I don't like the extra few inches that stick out of the barrel, but I guess that is why this choke is so good. I saw that Trulock makes chokes for Benelli and saw that on their web site that they have factory like chokes for turkey that is completely inside the barrel. I'm thinking about trying one for this year. Has anyone used one of these?

Mepperson, I have a Trulock .660 or .665. I haven't shot it much. I have a Benelli SBE & a Franchi 912 steadygrip. The best chokes for the money is the Hastings. In Mossberg 835/935 a .675 is the best. In Browning a .665 shoots real good. Before I bought the Truelock, check out Indian Creek Chokes. They set 2 new world records at NWTF sanctioned shoots with 45 in a 3" circle. This was accomplished with a stock Browning with a .665 Indian Ck. choke. I bought a .675 for a Mossberg but haven't had a chance to shoot it.
You can go to the NWTF web site & check out their message board. There is a lot of choke/ammo info. on there. Ask Night_hawk on that board. He is the record holder and world champion.

Thanks, I'm going to look right now. Are they flush or extended from the barrel?

LitleIndian, that Black Diamond choke from Indian Creek appears to be made just like my Mad Calls Super Maxx choke. it has the exact same type of porting system. I would really like to find a choke that is a flush type that does not extend past the barrel.

Mepperson,
They are extended. They also make the Mad chokes for Mad to Mad's specifications. The Indian Creek Chokes are better. I think you will find the best chokes will be extended. This allows for a longer parallel section. If you will PM Steve.Conover on this forum, he would answer any questions. He goes by Night_hawk on the NWTF board.
