When is the best time to visit mammoth cave? I haven't been there since I was a kid, and I though it might be a good day trip for my girlfriend and I to take to walk the trails and visit a cave tour.

Id go in the fall for the view outside the cave but inside i doubt it changes much..lol That is unless you vary your trips in 2000 year increments. Not sure on the tour schedule but id say its available on the net.

We go on the best tour available every year. You have not seen the true buety of the park until you float the green river. Sure the caves are nice but that section of river is awesome. We do a 2 day float form Munfurdville to the ferry every summer and it is a blast.
Xi if you enjoy bieng on the water their are a few guides down there. I may be able to get free one weekend and take you and your wife down. I doubt my wife will get to go this year, Preg women don't like canoes:D

You be sure to let me know when you go down. I have a kayak, and that sounds like a heck of a trip. I don't think the girlfriend would want to go, but you never know! If you don't think a kayak would be suitable I'm sure I can come up with a canoe somewhere. Let me know what you think.

The park end is good but deep long stretches of flat water. Thier are 2 caves that you an go in, one of then goes about 60-70 feet back. Tjhe other too tight to get into most of the time. It is a good stretch of water. We try to do several trips every year down different places on the green. It is by far the best river around here!

C.L some of it is considered class 2 but it is very managable. Not as much wildlife as I expected, in the 2 years we have gone we have seen a total of 5 deer and about 10 turkeys. We always park a few vehicles at the end and take one back to Munfurdville. They lock both places at night so theft is not really a problem. The guide service will take care of the shuttle for you if you use their caones and such. We just always use our own. If anyone decides to go let me know I will fill you in on a few things you might miss.

I went down there two years ago during the last week of August. There was basically nobody there. We had pre ordered our cave tours but all of them still had openings. I don't know if it is because most families aren't traveling at this time due to the start of school or what. One thing I will say is that we went out to eat one night at this little hometown joint right off of the highway that had some killer pulled pork bar-b-que. Kids even ate for free! We enjoyed their sauce so much that we bought 2 quarts of it to take home. :)
One thing that I noticed is that they no longer offer the cave tours where you ride on the river styx (the green river that is in the cave). I remember doing this as a youth. When I asked one of the rangers about it he said that it was too dangerous and that apparently there were some times when they were on that tour and the water level in the cave rose too fast and they had to exit the cave via another route because the could no longer navigate back to where the boat ramp is.

I heard that mammoth cave is loosing visitor numbers every year. Theme parks and zoo-type exibits are really taking a toll on mammoth cave. I really hate to hear that.
