I may have ruined mine. Seems the small bottle of bug spray I carry with me leaked some how. It saturated the pocket it was in and spread to some others as well. It was 100% deet. Anything that was plastic or rubber it ruined. All the little plastic mouth call holders it got on virtualy melted. Also one of those rubber snake bite kits melted. Couldn't ever seperate it. But the worse that happened it leached over to the pouch I keep my favorite call ever. It's a Cody glass and it took the finish right off the bottom of it. Luckily it still sounds alright but when I first saw it I think my heart stopped for a moment. Wont take much to refinish it though. Anyhow, thought I'd give a heads up to everybody to be carefull what you put in your vest. I couldn't believe all the damage that little bottle did. hw

I didn't know that bug spray would harm plastic materials:eek: I usually don't use bug spray in the spring, but I do in the fall during early bow season. Thanks for the heads up:)

In the spring and early fall, I spray all of my camo and boots with permanone tick repellant. It works great and tends to repel most biting insects. If anyone decides to use it, make sure you follow the directions. It can be very harmful to your health if it is misused. As far as the skeeters that ignore my clothing and come right for any bare skin, I usually just try my best to ignore them.

Thermacell!!!!! the only way to go! Thanks for the heads up on the spray though. Makes me glad ive never needed it. Think id invest in the thermacell this season if i were you. Great product and no bugs. Works great even in the swampy regions of Georgia. If it stops them big critters itll stop any bug we can throw at it in Ky.:)

Another big + for Thermocell. Went pig hunting in April in SC last year and even in the middle of a swamp at dusk or dawn, turn that thing on and five minutes later no bugs.

Actualy I hardly ever use bug spray. I always spray my vest and clothes down good with Permanone at the start of the season and thats usually it. Always carried a small bottle of some kind of repellent just in case. A Thermacel sounds good, might have to look into getting one. hw

this may sound a bit crazy but it works great, i find some sasafrass trees and take the leafs and rub them on my face and around my ears....it not only works great on nats, mosquitos, but smeels great...and it is free....
not sure if it works on ticks or not but havent found any on me since i started using this...

Kinda on the same subject but different..I was hog hunting this wk end and had been having a problem with a very, very, strong odor in my hunting clothes. I noticed it about a wk ago when walking in the woods. Smelled like carburetor, throttle body spray...real strong chemical smell. I thought it was that cause I use some every now and then on my throttle body and had a can in the back of my Cherokee.
However..I couldn't get rid of the smell and it was impregnating everything. My hunting vest..my cell phone, gps..everything and it was choking, sick smell. Anyway to make this long story come to and end..I found out it was my compass..the fluid in it had leaked out in my hunting vest...and whatever that fluid is has a sickening smell.

Don't get bug spray anywhere near plastic or nylon products of any kind or any painted surfaces whether it spills or is just on your skin.

It will eat most plastics, cause the foam grips of fishing rods to disintegrate in your hands, mar plastic panels in your truck when touched, take the camo paint finish right off of your expensive turkey gun, etc.

The stuff with deet in it is just about as nasty a paint and plastic solvent as you're likely to run across.

add binoculars, sunglasses and bows to that list as well....a good dose of skeeter spray on your hands then placing your hand on your bow will net you a nice shiny aluminum riser in short order......and spray that stuff on the coated lenses of binoculars or rifle scopes and it will etch the class/plastic lenses.....

if it does all that to plastic and paint, wonder what it does longterm to your skin.................
