Anybody have any info on sawtooth oaks? Are they as good as they are supposed to be? I have heard they are not all that but would like other opinions if you have tried them before. Also, I read that it took a white oak about 50 years to produce acorns. Is this true? I would like to plant some different types of oaks on my farm but would like to be around when the acorns fall. I have red oaks now but would like to put out some others if they would produce in a few years. Also want to put out some persimmon. Anyone ever plant them and if so, how did they do?
Thanks,

I planted about 200 persimmon seeds this spring. My grandmother seems to know quite a bit obout persimons and she said they would sprout like this. Seemed easy enough so Im trying it. She said they would bear "some" fruit in 5 or 6 years. I just planted them randomly and have no clue what a persimmon sprout looks like so cant say how they done. Im gonna put it on my list to check them out though

I've planted about 200 sawtooths and about 150 "gobbler" sawtooth oaks.
The first batch has been in the ground for 3 years and the gobblers have been out for 2 years. They are growing good. We fertilized them after the first year. Only a few have died from both plantings. We got the first bunch from Indiana Dept. of Forestry and the second batch from the NWTF. Kentucky's forestry dept. doesn't have them.
Are they any good? Good question. But they are about the only trees you can plant and see acorns in your own lifetime. Most other varities wil take at least 15 years to make a nut, some a lot longer.
We also planted some persimmons, but a lot of them died. I'm going to try another batch of sawtooths this spring if I can get them. Sometimes the supply of seedling is limited. BTW. we paid extra for a few 2year old seedlings while most of the others were 1 year old. You really can't tell the difference unless you knew. I'd save the money and just but the 1 year olds.

Basscat, I think your Grandma is right. We've got lots of persimmons on our place, both mature and little 'uns. I think the way a lot of 'em get started is in 'coon scat. It's slowed down a little bit now, but for the last several weeks, I've been finding a lot of poop with persimmon seeds in it. Little persimmon trees are popping up everywhere, since I don't clip the pasture anymore.
