Ok i've posted in another thread about a remington i was looking at, but due to cost and cost/availability of ammo. I've decided to look at other guns..
I think i've found the one that has everything i'm looking for and is in a price range that i'm happy with.

it's a ruger m77/markII sporter in 300 winmag (probably topped with a leupold scope)

thoughts about this rilfe?

M77® Mark II Sporter bolt action rifles are available in both right- and left-hand models and feature:

** Rugged, weather-resistant laminate stocks and stainless steel barreled actions.

** One-piece bolt that has proven to be one of the strongest on the market, standing up over the years to such magnum cartridges as the .375 H&H, .416 Rigby, and .458 Lott.

** Non-rotating, Mauser-type controlled-feed extractor, the most positive case extraction system ever invented, and a fixed blade-type ejector that positively ejects the empty cases as the bolt is moved fully rearward.

** Patented floorplate latch, mounted flush with the front of the trigger guard, that secures the hinged floorplate against accidental dumping of cartridges, yet allows quick unloading of the magazine by simply pressing from the outside of the guard.

** Patented integral scope rings that attach directly to the receiver's precision-machined mounting surfaces, eliminating a potential source of looseness and inaccuracy in the field (included at no extra cost).

** Easily accessible three-position safety that allows the shooter to lock the bolt, or to load and unload with the safety engaged.

** Studs for mounting sling swivels.

I have the same gun but it is a compact in .243. I also have a rugar .270 in the composite stock w/ ss barrell. They are both great guns. I have taken many of deer with these guns. My wife shot her first buck at 275 yards with the .243. I have had no issues with either guns.

Looks like a GREAT decision to me. Hard to argue with their reputation. I would top it with a 3.5-10x50 Leupold Vari X III , Good Luck. :D

I have the same gun in 7mm mag with a Nikon monarch 3x9 40mm . One fine gun their is nothing I dont like about it. It is a tack driver with 160 nosler partitions out of a Federal box. Good Luck

I've loved every one I own. The built in dovetails for the scope rings are the best.

A bit off topic but this got me thinking.....The Ruger I have always wanted to own is the Ruger 44 Carbine. They don't make them anymore but from the ones I have shot at the range, they would make an absolute deer slayer if you are a woods hunter.

Besides, the next 200 yard shot I get on a deer will be the first.

Tony:

I har a Ruger carbine and, unfortunately, sold it to a friend just at the time they stopped making them. I now have a lever action Ruger 96 and it is even more accurate. See my post from a few weeks back http://www.kentuckyhunting.net/forums/showthread.php?t=38720

A Friend of mine has that particular Ruger Rifle in .300 Win. Mag. He shot a Doe with it last season, and the rifle seems like a very good one. I personally own (and have owned) several Ruger M-77 rifles and never had trouble with any of them.

Short of a custom, that is one of the best, mass produced, rifles on the market. Fantastic.
