Greetings all! I am a new member, have been visiting for awhile though...gotta say its a nice community.

I am very interested in learning all about the Kentucky Elk hunting regulations and was hoping you all would be willing to share some info. Somethings I cannot seem to find answers to in the regs.

When a person gets drawn for Elk, do the authorities assign you a specific section within a area to hunt or do you have the ability to roam about the whole area or maybe I should say zone instead of area?

I have seen a few posts here refer to "the elk undertakers"... can someone explain?

If you harvest an Elk, can you quarter it up to get it out of the field or do you have to drag it out?

I have lots of questions, but I will cut it off here for now.

Thanks to everyone in advance!

Welcome to the Community!

Presently there are 4 kinds of Elk permits.

Limited Entry: Permits that allow Elk Hunting on a Specific Limited Entry WMA.

Zone At Large: Permits that Allow Elk Hunting any where inside the Elk Restoration Zone Except Limited Entry Areas.(Some Public WMAs are open for Zone at Large Elk Hunters but, Private land access seems to be productive in both number and Quality of Elk.)

Land Owner: A small number of Land owner permits are granted to land owners that have a minimum of 5,000 acres. I'm Not certain about all of the criteria for this Kind of permit, but I do know they exist.

Auctioned Permits: A Small number of Permits that are auctioned by conservation groups each year, from which the proceeds go toward state conservation projects.

"The Elk Undertakers" are a great group of guys from Wayland, Kentucky that have assisted several Lucky hunters fulfill their lifelong dreams of hunting elk and assisting in the recovery process. Their Leader is forum member screamin6x6.

You can quarter your Elk to get it out of the field. The Undertakers can usually get it out in one piece!

Thanks for your time raven_over_easy

So the Limited Entry sounds like areas with a high population of Elk?

How does the private land access work out? Do the hunters have to pay trespass fees or just make calls to the landowners to get permission?

Sounds like most of the terrain is accessible by vehicles?

Also sounds like Wayland must be the Elk capital of Kentucky.

There are a number of us who would tell you that Wayland is ,in fact, the elk capital of Kentucky.
However, I'm sure many of the areas in the elk zone are equal to it, insofar as numbers of elk are concerned. But, we were blessed with being associated with some great people in Wayland, who basically held our hands from start to finish.
Those types of people probably exist all over S/E Kentucky. We just happen to have had experience with those in Wayland.
