Just cleared off some land for the purpose of growing some kind of food plot for deer. Any help will be Greatly appreciated. What should i grow w/ the least amount of farm machinery avaiable. i had a pond dug on one end of the property. When should i start the planting? I live in the southeastern part of Ky.Thanks again

depending on how much your field is worked up. you could put in some of those wildlife mixes. something with clover. alfaltha, maybe some peas and throw in some native forbs and you have a start. or with more equipment try corn or soybeans. you will be planting very soon within the next month or so. i used to broadcast all my seed and then use a fence gate i pulled behind a truck or atv to cover up the seed. but perhaps most important is to get a soil test to determine what you need as far as lime and fertilizer. once you get off to a good start its just a matter of watching for problem weeds like thistle and johnson grass. and bushhogging now and then i am not an expert but i had a lot of luck on my farm. good luck bowens

Rack-um,
We started out a few years ago the same way.
First we tried winter wheat, then rye, worked alright
second we order seed from whitetail institute, clover
was good,no-plow not so great.Last year we tried
rutnstrut seed mix on two acre field, did'nt think
it would make to the next year, deer and turkey kept
it ate down.Gonna plant five more acres this year.
The good thing about it will reseed for about three
years,if the deer will let it.

Get you some red and ladino clover from your local southern states or other ag dealer. I burned off some land last Feb and then sowed it with the clover. It did real well. This year it needs mowing already. The stuff is knee high already and the deer and turkey are in it daily. I plan on mowing it in a couple weeks. I didn't do much as far as busting up the ground either. Just took an old set of section harrows and dragged them around with a 4 wheeler enough to loosen the top a little. I also put out a couple bags of the wildlife mix the state gives away. It did real well and they ate it all before Oct.
Good Luck,
