Fella's I was reading Wedesday's Local Paper and this Head Line Above caught my eye...

Story by: Doug Gross, Associated Press

Seems like supporters are in a quest for more responsive government in a county with a population greater than that of six states. They want Legislation to allow suburbs to form their own county. To be called Milton County, was introduced by members of the Georgia Legislature's Republican majority earlier this month.Opponents say the measure is racially motivated and will pit white against black, rich against poor..

"If it gets to the floor, there will be blood on the walls," warned Sen. Vincent Fort, an Atlanta Democrat and a member of the Legislative Black Caucus. He says aas you would like to think it's not racial, it's difficult to draw any other conclusion.

The Legislation calls for amending the Georgia Constitution to allow the return of Milton County, which succumbed to financial troubles during the depression and folded into Fulton County in 1932.

Milton County would have a population of about 300,000, instantly making it Georgia's 5th largest county.

Residents of North Fulton represent 29% of the county's population of 915,000, but pay 42% of it's property taxes. A split would lead to the loss of 193 millino in property taxes alone for Fulton County.

All in all the thought is, if this is allowed it would hurt Atlanta and the Predomantly Black Population and the new Milton county would have nothing but white people and all the money. Plus it states that the split would harm Atlanta's International reputation as a progressive city and hurt its appeal as a buisness, entertainment and convention destination...

I don't know anything about it, but seems like it's more economically motivated than racially motivated.

I'd bet the folks that live in the proposed Milton County would be arguing for the exact same split even if everyone else in Fulton County was white.

It's interesting that the article mentioned that Fulton County would lose $193 million in property taxes, but doesn't bother mentioning how much it would save by virtue of not have to provide services to that area.

If I was a betting man though, I'd bet this goes nowhere.

Did you find the article Buckfever, if not I'll see if I can scan it and post it here for all to view, I'm sure we have at least a few members that are from Atlanta of were from Atlanta that might give more input on this....

Milton has been trying to get out from under Fulton county's umbrella for quite some time. It is in an affluent area in the northmost part of the county most commonly referred to as Alpharetta. They are basically tired of paying the lion's share of taxes for the county while not getting their money's worth in services, etc.
This is the first that I've heard of it being a 'racially' motivated move, though. Of course, with the local government being mostly Republican the opponents (Democrats) are doing what they normally do, play the race card. Jeezzzz....I'm counting the days until I can get out of this rat race & retire on the banks of the green river.

One story stated that the part that wants to break away has only 29% of the county's population, but pays 42% of the taxes.

Just like Louisville:D

And people would love to see us break away. They would love for us to break off and become part of Indiana. some would be satisfied if we just broke away into the Ohio river.

Believe me, this is from a True 100% Hoosier....Indiana doesn't want any part of the Most Craziest City on the face of the Earth to be associated with it... Plus too much crime / murders and drug user's to bring into Indiana.

Great State and they want to keep it that way......

Hoosiers don't mind it enough to stay in Indiiana for a job or cheaper gas. Far as I'm, concerned, they should blow the bridges.

:D

Give Louisville to Rev. Coleman to have as his own.

I see, you don't want to take away the luster from Gary, IN, the East St. Louis of the Hoosier state.

Yeah, but he only started saying that after the state primarily used Louisville tax revenues to build the road to his house.

If Indiana added Louisville (which nobody from Louisville wants anyway), at least Indiana would finally have a decent big city to live in. . .

I suppose that they subscribe to the thought that "the rising tides raises all ships"....

I'm glad that I do not live there.

That part of the city has hosted several meetings and classes I took while i worked for Lexus, and anybody would notice the absence of the african/american percentage of residents compared to 10 miles in any direction of that community in the A.T.L.

Hey take away the bridges like Multi said and then you have the bridge problem solved. Forget about painting or building any bridges.
