When can I put in for an elk permit for a chance to get drawn?

I believe that you can get them * The Application * you have to send in a $ 10.00 check, money order or cashier Check that is non-Refundable, even if you are not drawn for the quota hunt, from Wal-Mart when you buy your hunting / fishing license or contact the Ky Fish & Wildlife for more info....

I don't want to make it any easier for the "competition", lol, but if its like it was last year, I applied without my posterior leaving the chair in which it is currently resting. Watch the Dept of Wildlife website for instructions for 2007. I paid electronically, via credit card. Super easy process.

To make it simpler on you, you could just send me $10. That way you'd already know you weren't drawn.
All kidding aside, have they expanded the draw this year, or is it still 400?

For the past several years, I have purchased my Sportsman's license from the KDFW booth at the Sport Boat and RV show in Lexington at Heritage Hall (I think it's usually held in February..but I may be mistaken). I have always paid the $10 for the chance at being drawn for an elk here in Ky too. They just added it on to the total of the Sportsman's license. I think the total was $90 for everything last year.

Don't believe that is correct.
Sportsman License - Includes Combination Hunting and Fishing License, Resident Deer Permit, Spring Turkey Permit, Resident Fall Archery Turkey Permit, Resident Fall Firearm Turkey Permit, State Waterfowl Permit and Trout Permit

ptbraunch, I see in your post that you state that something cost $ 400.00, what is this $ 400.00 for....Is that what it cost to Elk Hunt if you get drawn...Would be too $$$ High for me, but I'd be more than happy to pass the Tag onto someone else if I'm drawn...That is if it is legal to do so...
That is a good question: If I submit my name and pay my $ 10.00 to get into the Elk Hunt Draw...But decide to not hunt, can I pass the Hunt on to someone else...Just asking the board here in case they know , so I don't have to call the Ky Fish & Game for the info....

The Elk chance is different this year. The period to buy the permit has been changed to end on April 30.
The idea is to give those drawn a better chance to find a place to hunt.
MSG- The 400 is the number of permits to be drawn this year, and they are not transferrable.

I think he was trying to say that it was the Sportsman + the $10 application for a total of $90

Totally clueless here about Elk hunting, but say I am drawn out for the hunt. How in the world would /could I even find a place to hunt them. Would I have to invest more money in hiring a guide to take me to the Elk so that I could maybe fill my tag. What about the Aninmal after I shoot it, how would I get something so big out of the woods. I've seen them using Heleicopters on TV in order to get the Elk out, because they weigh so much. Again totally clueless here. But the Hunt does sound really interesting and thrilling. To call one in and get it close enough to shoot. Would my 30-06 be able to kill such a big animal, or just wound him and make him mad?
Thanks to all who reply to my curious questions....

If you happen to get drawn, go talk to KDFWR and they will help you out with finding a place to hunt. You may even get drawn in a limited entry area, then you will be assigned a place to hunt. Each year so far, there have been very few hunters that don't fill there tags. I'm not sure but this year may have been the first year that there were tags that weren't filled. I'm sure that number will go up with the amount of tags that are issued, but if you get drawn you are still highly, highly likely to kill whatever your after. As far as the actual hunting goes, there's no other game animal like it and after you go once, you'll be hooked. Don't worry about using your 30-06, there are probably more elk killed with that caliber than any other out there. If you could get hold of one, it wouldn't hurt to go with something that has a little more range, but for 95% of the shots in elk country in Kentucky your 30-06 will definitely do the job.

Plenty of folks on this forum who can point you in the right direction as to gaining access if an "at-large" tag and some probably willing to help you get your elk out, answer questions, etc. All you need is the tag...;) As for unfilled tags this is not the first year with unfilled tags. I know of someone who drew a bull tag two years ago and never attempted it. Most of the time though those who attempt to hunt are successful.
Good luck in getting drawn. It is an experience of a life time....:D I hope someday to be lucky enough to draw a bull tag.

Ok, thanks for the help, and for answering my questions.
I guess I'll go ahead and ask now, How much would it cost to get the Full Head mount done at a Taxidermist, just the Rack done?
If I am lucky enough to get one ( Elk ) would someone like to have the meat from the Elk I kill, I'm asking now so that I can get someone lined up to take the meat off of my hands. you see I'm the only one on my side of teh family that would even think about eating Elk meat...So at most I'd only need about 20 pounds of the meat... I guess I could donate the meat to that Feed The Hungry Program...Cause I sure don't want to let the meat waste...No since in hunting if I can't give someone the meat....
Thanks Guys, this web site is the best.....

I'm going to go out on a limb here MSG, and say once you taste it, you'll want to keep more than 20 lbs :D
IF GSP can't handle it all, though, I'll be more than willing to help you out :)
