Make sure you got the right scope mounts. just cause they fit don't mean their the right ones.

The 710's have lots of problems. From reports even after he gets the scope mounted right it will break something. Some dealers across the country won't sell them due to custumer complaints and returns. Too late now but he should have bought a Savage. Cheap but always shoot well.

I've got a 710 in 270 cal that I'm real happy with. Seems to be a real solid gun, I also have a friend with one in 30-06 that he is happy with.

I had one never had a problem with it and it shot great rightout of the box guess i was lucky because i have heard of bolt issues ect. and the scope that comes with it is cheap but you get what you pay for.

My bolt was tight when I first got it, however, after cleaning it and putting a good coat of oil on it, it works fine now.

It seems that the 710's are either on or off and no in between. I have a '06 and shoots as well as any rifle I have ever shot/owned (I have owned several). As a matter of fact, last week I shot 40 rounds at 100 yds with Rem's Express CL 150's. My best was a .45 and my worst was a 1.75. My bolt has never stuck or jammed. My ONLY issue with that model is the clip design. I am rubbing off some of the synthetic stock at the receiver end due to a very tight (in my opinion) design. I do agree the scope is cheap. It requires more light than most to be clear. I have considered getting a Simmons with the lighted reticle i.e. something with better clarity/design. But apart from that, an excellent buy for me and a rifle I would recommend for those wanting to explore a 06 or 270.
Good luck next week.

OH, I forgot to mention. I was not sure what you meant by shooting well at 50 yds. But both the 270 and 06 will shoot 1.5 inches higher at 100 yds (vs. 50) in normal trajection. I say this b/c if you are grouping well at 50 i.e. 2 inches, then you should group well at 100. Unless the scope mounts are loose and the scope is moving the line of sight every time you fire, then a good group at 50 should coorespond to a good group at 100 (just 1.5 inches higher if you are sighting at bulls).
One suggestion, the 710's trigger is not at all very good out of box. I would take it to a shop and have them adjust the trigger or do it your self if you know how. Mine had a significant amount of travel (creep) before firing. That, in itself, can cause huge differences when you are firing at 100+ yds. Just a suggestion.

I had a problem choosing between the Savage 111 and Rem 710 before I bought my .270, decided on the Savage because everyone seems to love them. I do too now. Not much creep on the trigger, not too heaver pull either. I decided against the 710 also because I heard of the action and bolt problems. Check the Remington website, put in your serial number there, and if you have a defective gun they'll pay for the repair of the bad bolt. It's a problem Remington knows about, and seems to be putting a good faith effort out to fix it. Either way, any .270 or .30-06 you buy will grow on you, cheap or not. And you'll learn to love it.
