what kind of grass is it that grows in great big clumps. our yard is full of it and it looks awful

Most of the time you will find this to be fescue.

Most of your cool season grasses clump and try speading their stems (even more after mowing) if they are not crowded. You may be looking at Timothy, fescue, orchard grass. If these are in a bare spot with no competition and they have been mowed. They will spread their stalks and be pretty ugly. Your best bet is sow grass seed of your choice heavy around them. That will help choke them back in place.
