"The NRA-PVF ranks political candidates-irrespective of party affiliation-based on voting records, public statements and their responses to an NRA-PVF questionnaire. In 2004, NRA-PVF was involved in 265 campaigns for the U.S. House and Senate, winning in 254 of those races. These victories represent the re-election of pro-gun majorities in both the U.S. House and Senate.

NRA relies on a very simple premise: when provided with the facts, the nation's elected officials will recognize that "gun control" schemes are an infringement on the Second Amendment and a proven failure in fighting crime. The importance of this premise lies in the knowledge that, as one U.S. Congressman put it: "The gun lobby is people.'"

The following ratings are based on lifetime voting records, public statements, and a questionnaire sent to all candidates in that year; the organization then assigned letter grades ranging from a high of A+ to a low of F. Grades current as of October 12, 2006.

I see Mark Kirk (R-IL) got an F.

I served in the Naval Reserves with Mark, he as an Intel Officer and myself as aircrew in a squadron and we discussed gun control several times. He was certainly no fan of it and did not think it effective but his district (North side of Chicago) was very much for it based upon a shooting that happened there several years ago. I believe that Mark is in the position then to have to support the views of his voters and not his own position. By the way he is still in the Reserves and did six months in Iraq supporting my old squadron this year. This is a good guy who is simply supporting what the majority of his constitutes want.

Isn’t that what politicians are supposed to do?

Good point. I wish there were more like him in our political system. The majority of our politicians want what their party wants and not what their constituates want.

Illinois is very anti-gun. It's no surprise that any politician that wants to get elected in Illinos will bite the bullet and try to ban them as well.

Illinois is not anti-gun. Chicago is anti-gun and like every other State with a big city they run the state. Or, shall I say they run over the state. Witness New York (NYC), Washington State (Seattle) or Maryland (Balitmore/DC) for other examples of conservative states ruled by liberals because of population centers. The price of living in a democracy.

I disagree. The State is invested with Democrats. If you hunt in Illinois with a gun, you have to carry a I.D. (FIOC) card for some reason, who knows.

I don't know about democrats or republicans ruling Illinois. But i don't see a lot of difference between having to carry an ID card, or a card proving you have taken a hunter ed course, or the ID card you have to have with you if you bought your license online. I don't like any of it.

While I know and believe that it is mainly the Dems that are pro gun control, you really have to take a close look at who is putting out that information, and who is doing the grading! Just like Fox news, the NRA is ALWAYS going to be biased for the Republican party. Was their grading system fair and balanced?

Looks like the NRA would do much better funneling some of that lobby money to the Dems scoring "F"'s" rather than for the upkeep of the Repub's already in thier pockets.

I would like very much to have an organization that would speak for ALL concerned citizens on the subject of pro gun, not just one political party. We need an organization that has no political affiliation.

Grouser,
Each elected representative receives a questionaire from the NRA. Each one is the same, with the same questions. The questions run similar to this:

1. A nation-wide gun registration would be effective in controlling crime.
A. I agree completely
B. I agree somewhat
C. I am neutral
D. I disagree somewhat
E. I disagree completely

The results of this questionaire are than graded on a point basis and a final score of A-F is assigned. It is completely fair and not slanted to one party or the other. The politician's responses determine the grade received. I have seen the NRA's scores in the past and some politicians will refuse to return the questionaire and that fact is mentioned in place of a grade.

You have repeatedly insisted that the NRA is a partisan organization. I think it would be more accurate to state that they are a one-issue organization, and they fall opposite of most Democrats on that one issue.

Several Dems receive endorsements and support from the NRA. That is a fact. More Democrats support gun control than do Republicans. That is a fact also. That is not partisan politics; it is simply the fight against gun control.

The NRA is a very powerful lobby, maybe the most powerful one out there. This ain't their first rodeo. They didn't gain that strength by being stupid enough to dole out money to those with views totally oppisite to what they represent.

If we abandon the NRA, then it won't be long that the F's get bigger and more of them start showing up.

Looks like gun right supportor like yourself would get with the program and stop supporting all those getting the F's????

There is a growing faction of gun control nuts in the Republican party. Many Republicans accept gun control in concept, but simply want to make it "reasonable" or "common sense". While it is true that no new anti gun legislation has passed under the Republican control, they have also done nothing to repeal any of it either. I predict as the Bloomberg's of the republican party continue their rise to powere the 2nd amendment "aware" Republicans will begin to value their vote again and search elsewhere to put it.

National Democratic Party

Strong and Sensible Gun Laws. A shocking level of gun violence on our streets and in our schools has shown America the need to keep guns away from those who shouldn't have them - in ways that respect the rights of hunters, sportsmen, and legitimate gun owners. The Columbine tragedy struck America's heart, but in its wake Republicans have done nothing to keep guns away from those who should not have them.
Democrats believe that we should fight gun crime on all fronts - with stronger laws and stronger enforcement. That's why Democrats fought and passed the Brady Law and the Assault Weapons Ban. We increased federal, state, and local gun crime prosecution by 22 percent since 1992. Now gun crime is down by 35 percent.
Now we must do even more. We need mandatory child safety locks, to protect our children. We should require a photo license I.D., a full background check, and a gun safety test to buy a new handgun in America. We support more federal gun prosecutors, ATF agents and inspectors, and giving states and communities another 10,000 prosecutors to fight gun crime.
Source: 2000 Democratic National Platform (http://www.democrats.org/about/platform1.html).

National Republican Party
We defend the constitutional right to keep and bear arms, and we affirm the individual responsibility to safely use and store firearms. Because self-defense is a basic human right, we will promote training in their safe usage, especially in federal programs for women and the elderly. A Republican administration will vigorously enforce current gun laws, neglected by the Democrats, especially by prosecuting dangerous offenders identified as felons in instant background checks. Although we support background checks to ensure that guns do not fall into the hands of criminals, we oppose federal licensing of law-abiding gun owners and national gun registration as a violation of the Second Amendment and an invasion of privacy of honest citizens. Through programs like Project Exile, we will hold criminals individually accountable for their actions by strong enforcement of federal and state firearm laws, especially when guns are used in violent or drug-related crimes. With a special emphasis upon school safety, we propose the crackdown on youth violence explained elsewhere in this platform.
Source: 2000 GOP Platform: Renewing Family and Community (URL no longer available).

Libertarian Party
The Bill of Rights recognizes that an armed citizenry is essential to a free society. We affirm the right to keep and bear arms and oppose all laws at any level of government restricting, regulating, or requiring the ownership, manufacture, transfer, or sale of firearms or ammunition. We oppose all laws requiring registration of firearms or ammunition. We also oppose any government efforts to ban or restrict the use of tear gas, "mace," or other self-protection devices. We further oppose all attempts to ban weapons or ammunition on the grounds that they are risky or unsafe.
We support repeal of all gun control laws and we demand the immediate abolition of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms.
We favor the repeal of laws banning the concealment of weapons or prohibiting pocket weapons. We also oppose the banning of inexpensive handguns ("Saturday night specials"), and semi-automatic or so-called assault weapons and their magazines or feeding devices.

Constitution Party
The right to bear arms is inherent in the right of self defense, defense of the family, and defense against tyranny, conferred on the individual and the community by our Creator to safeguard life, liberty, and property, as well as to help preserve the independence of the nation.
The right to keep and bear arms is guaranteed by the Second Amendment to the Constitution; it may not properly be infringed upon or denied.
The Constitution Party upholds the right of the citizen to keep and bear arms. We oppose attempts to prohibit ownership of guns by law-abiding citizens, and stand against all laws which would require the registration of guns or ammunition. We emphasize that when guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have them. In such circumstances, the peaceful citizen’s protection against the criminal would be seriously jeopardized.
