I seen in the new KY Afield Mag. and they had the top 5 elk scores listed. My question is this. One of the elk is listed as 345". I personally scored the elk at 353" green and 351 last Saturday. The rack has never left my posession. It stays behind the archery counter with me and will continuue to do so until the taxidermist gets the cape tanned. I did not kill the elk but was with the hunter when he killed it. So to my question. Where in the world did they get the score of 345"? Nobody from the state has attempted or offered to score the rack. Another rack was published at 356". Again, we scored the rack at 364". To my knowledge, this rack had never been offically scored. So why publish scores that are not official or accurate?

I have no knowledge about the other 3 racks. But I am now in doubt about the accuracy of them as well.

If you are referring to the KY Afield article in the winter 2006 issue, it clearly states that those are preliminary scores and not official. They were "green scored" the day of harvest. Those elk were not eligible to be officially measured until 60 days after harvest.

Official B&C measurers are not supposed to officially measure any rack until it meets the drying time.

When I "green score" a rack, I simply roughly measure the smallest side, double it then add the inside spread, the hunter gets a ballpark estimate on the conservative side and is not disappointed when the offical score is determined.

The elk I am referring to was not "green scored" by the state. I green scored the elk at 353.5 and have again scored the elk at 351.675. I am not an official B&C scorer. BUT, like I said, no one from the state has offered to score the elk as of yet. All they did the day of the harvest is measure the inside spread and main beams.

Don't take this as a shot at the state. I love the ability I have to buy my tags over the counter and have my chance at one of the best deer herds in the country and a great turkey season as well. The Elk restoration has been marvelous to say the least.

I am just wondering where in the world they came up with a score of 345".

Bignasty's Elk , if I heard Sam correctly, Green scored 345 B&C. That may be the one.
