The ole' 270 is seeing its better days. I've had it for over 20 years now. The stock had enough character marks to look like Charles Bronsons' face. It has served me well, antelope, mule deer, elk and I can't count the number of whitetails....
Wife has agreed to get me a new rifle for Xmas.....now the fun part. I think I've narrowed it down to a new 7MM UM or 300 UM. But with all the new cartridges out there, my question is which one is going to survive, 300 UM , 300 SAUM, 300 WSM or 7MM insert designation. All in reality shoot about the same according to the charts. I like to get a new Remington 700 BDL or Model 7. Okay, who has the skinny on this and what do you all think? I plan to use it for elk, deer, caribou and maybe bear...

I like the .340 Weatherby as a better all around choice. Super balistics. You can find the Alaskan line at very decent prices.

I bought a 300WSM last year and absolutely love it! It was a "Walmart Special" and kicks like a mule, but shoots really well.

I have a 25-06, a 30-30, a 30-06, a 300WSM and a 338 WinMag. I would feel comfortable with all of them on your listed species except for the 30-30. The 25-06 may be a little marginal if bullet placement isn't precise. If I were limited to one, the 30-06 is definitely "the ONE." Frankly, if I went into a gun store I'd make the decision more on the rifle than the caliber. I have a Ruger, a Rem 700, two Win 70 classics and a Marlin 336. I can shoot all of them well, but everyone's different. If, for example, a Ruger on the shelf fit you better than a 700, and one was a 308 and one was a 7mmRem, I wouldn't get hung up on the caliber. Shot placement is the key, and you must be able to handle the rifle to accomplish that.

I agree with schuyler olt! except i think you would be very pleased with the 7mm remington

I would get another 270. I was in the same situation. I went out bought a 300wsm it is an awesome gun, but it is harder than crap to find the shells that arent 40 bucks a box. If you just want a different gun go with the 300wsm or 270wsm.

I'm a fan of the 25-06. I like the less kick same result thing. 270 a great choice too. I just wonder 20 years from now how readily available all these wsm um sum whatever are going to be. Oh forgot ssm

If she wasn't mad about that, she'd be mad about something else.Let's go huntin.

Weatherby Vanguard synthetic on sale right now at Wal Mart for 388.99. My stores have the 7mm, 270 amnd the 300 weatherby mag. I like all of them but damn, 45.00 dollars for a box of 20 shells for a 300 mag? I like my 11 dollar shells for the 06 ( :

I have heard nothing but great things about the Vanguard. Right now, it is essentially the same gun as it was back in the Vanguard DLX (minus the wood of course) days.

Thanks for all the input. I bit the bullet so to speak and bought the Remington 700 Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation rifle in 300 SAUM. I spoke with Basswipe in length on this cartridge and will give it try. That 50 dollar rebate helped some too!! I have several other rifles beside the the 270, A .243 .32 Winchester Special and a .30.30 thompson contender, so this is stepping up so to speak for me. Look out Elk next year!! Now if momma will let me put a scope on it and use it before Christmas, I'd really be happy.

Bought one of those Walmart special in 7mmWSM, A winchester Super Shadow with Scope and mounts at $389. Can't beat the price. Rifle shots great, but trigger sucks. The cheapest ammo I have found is at Walmart. The very best deer rifle, if you can find one, is a 35-06, or 35 Whelen. A 30-06 necked up to take a 35 caliber bullet. Saw one at the Cave City gun show 2 weeks ago for $350. They don't move when you shoot'em solid, doesn't do a lot of meat damage either. Basically a ballistic twin of the 350 Rem. Mag.

The 35 Whelen is an extremely awesome round, I'd love to find one somewhere.

i shot a savage 308. ive shot deer out to 300 yards and never had 1 go more that 20 yards, its good for long range with out the kick and iv hit a branch 1 time and the bullet still found its mark ,makes a great brush gun to.. i think its the best gun cal in my opinion..

If you're thinking about bear, well...black? Griz? It matters, there's a pretty substantial size difference. If you can shoot it well, a 35 Whelen is hard to beat, same for the 338-06. But, just for kicks, how about putting a new stock on the trusty 270 of yours, that you know inside and out, and have proven it's performance in the field? The savings might help finance that "far away" hunt you've been dreaming about. BTW, I use an 8x57 Mauser for everything, and come the day that beautiful stock gets dinged up badly, I won't be shopping for another rifle, I'll be looking for a synthetic stock to out on it! Good Luck, whatever choice you make!

Going out and buying some ammo for it today and start the seasoning in process for the barrel. I'm also going to work up some loads for it. Factory ammo for this puppy is a bear. Ordered a Leupold VXII for it in a 3x9 40MM, should come in next week. I'll let you know how it shoots and if I need to put a muzzle break on it.

I know its been awhile, but I finally got the scope on this rifle and shot it yesterday. I only shot a three round group at 25 yards as I'm trying to break the barrel in right. But I was impressed. A buddy of mine installed the scope and calibrated it for me. He must have did a heckuva job....from the bench on sight master rest, three shots, two touching, the other off by a 1/16 all in the 10 ring, just hair out of the 10x. I had been shooting my blackpowder gun getting ready for our 3rd District championship shoot and was a litte apprehnesive on the kick/recoil of the .300 SAUM. I was pleasently suprised, its loud, but the recoil with that R3 pad was not bad at all. I can't wait to get this puppy seasoned in and start shooting a some long range and see what is does.
Thanks Basswipe for all your advice on this gun.

Hey RDL I have seen the way you shoot your bow in the shop, so why spend the $$ on a scope like that. haha just messing with ya man. Good luck with it.

I got a new rifle this year, a 7mm-08 remington. how does this rifle do short range, I know it is great for long range since it is a flat shooter, but what if I've got a 10 to 50 yard shot? is this too much gun? can't wait to get it to the range and see what it does. anyone have one of these? how do you like it?

Where can you come up with reloading supplies for these new rounds? I was trying to find data on them, have they made any new manuals for them?

The 300 Ultra Mag is to big for deer hunting, my brother got 1 for Xmas 1 year an he took his first deer with it on opening day of rifle season, needless to say there was no tracking involved, an almost no gutting, Ive never seen an exit hole like that 1, you could fit a end of 12oz pop can in it no problem. Id go with the 7mm UM.

.270 to me is the best all around awnser to big game hunting. I have owned one for years and now shoot a .270 in a styer safe bolt. The styer is the best shooting rifle out of the box that I have ever owned.I'm looking to get a weatherby .257 mag in the near future just can not afford it yet and really do not need it just love the cal.
