While wademup was shooting his cow, I was being taken on the 4wheeler ride of my life, trying to head off the elks before shooting light ended, a race that was going to be close. I was 6 ft tall before the hunt, but after the first 4 wheeler ride of my life as a passenger and the obligatory lower back pounding, I am now 5 ft tall. At any rate, thanks to the scouting of Jerry Hall and the driving skills of Sam Taylor, we got in amongst them(the last 100 yards on foot), and I put the scope on 6, which upon careful(in the twilight) examination, all turned out to be spikes and a raghorn. However, at 2 minutes after legal shooting time Sunday morning, we were trying to put the sneak on some in a holler field, and dropped down on a terrace below the road to stay out of sight when Sam and Jerry looked over the edge , jumped back and told me to put my scope on low power and get ready to shoot. "They are right there","they are right there" meaning some were just out of sight on the next terrace below.
Someone handed me my shooting sticks, assured me that the elk that we both were looking at was a cow, and told me to shoot her on the point of the shoulder. At the shot, she went over the edge, but did not leave when the rest of the bunch did. I was told by my associates that she was hard hit. After waiting for five minutes or so, we went down to admire my "medium sized cow", which turned out to be a big cow upon close inspection, and had only managed a very yards before she was done. What can I say? When my partners get me within 40 yards, and I am prepared for the shot, shooting sticks etc., even an old man can make those! This was a super hunt. As wademup said, most of the day Saturday was rather ho-hummy for most of us, but as evening came on, the excitement level quickened, and Sunday morning for me was the climax. I had never met Sam Taylor and Jerry Hall before this weekend. To be treated with such hospitality, to step right in with several of the hunters, as if I had hunted with them for years, and to watch the "elk undertakers" in action, was just an outstanding experience. THANKS GUYS! My compatriot, Ken Stumpenhorst from my town of Jackson, TN, experienced everything that I did also, with the exception of pulling the trigger. Thanks also, Ken, for all of your help.
And, I would post pictures of which we took a number, but we are just learning to use the digital camera which my son and daughter-in-law gave me for my 70th birthday, which is next Sunday. Hey, I fully expect to get drawn again next year.:D
