I just made it home from work and found out three more elk/car collisions happened around here this morning. Two were smaller bulls and I don't know about the 3rd, (it left the scene after destroying a full size Chevy truck).

That is a bummer in a big way, after hitting a small six point whitetail once in a buddy's truck I cant even imagine what hitting an elk would be like! Hope everyones alright and gosh I hope I dont hit one, with my luck!!

I think you will be alone in your thinking about this subject. Most people love the fact that they are coming back . Accidents will happen.

Believe it or not, that's the way alot of people in this area feel about having the elk here. They do cause problems this time of year when they migrate down closer to most of the houses and highways. They can and will turn a nicley groomed yard into a slpoppy mess in a couple nights. I know one guy that woke up one morning to discover that they had eaten the paint off the fender of his car. Of course, we all know how to deal with those nuisance animals, all we need are more tags.

Ditto.
Elk are are fine and good until one is coming through your windshield, then your mood changes greatly. Knott Co. is lucky no one has been killed yet. When that happens, the elk program will come under some real scrutiny.

I can't even imagine hitting an elk.
I just had a 140ish class 10 point whitetail run full bore into the driver's side door of the car I drive to work, caving it and the rear door in and busting off the rear view mirror.
Yet we have guys complaining because they can't see 20 deer in a sitting while on stand. Evidently they don't have to drive through the things every single day.
I would say the folks that have to travel the areas with the elk have a legitimate concern.

collisions come with the animals. I think its great that the population is growing. I just hope they make it closer to cumberland and clinton counties!!!

you'll be waiting a long time because they aren't going to let them expand that far.

They are a whole lot like shooting at a horse. They are just standing out there and you just shoot ya one.Or that was how it was when I went with a guy a couple of years ago.He just heard the bull and walked over the bank and shot it.But we wasn't in the at large zone... That may be a little different. If I got drawed I would go because the meat is damn good!!!! Good luck to the guys who got drawed!!!

I at least appreciate the fact now that everybody who draws doesn't kill. All those years where everybody who drew a bull tag filled it made it seem a little silly to me. Makes me feel that the herd is a little more wild. I've never been a proponent of the elk restoration program, but since they are here now to stay, I guess I might as well be now, lol! I know if I lived in BFEastern Kentucky where these elk lived, it would be awfully frustrating not to be able to kill one should the opportunity arise.

the elk will get smarter, just like the deer, the elk will start finding places that do not see much human traffic during the hunt. also the state will need to do like they have done out west, track where the migration seems to be the worst as far as roads, and put up game fences/barriers, with pass thru areas for the elk to cross. but the draw back is going to be the price increase for the chance to hunt the great elk. we can only hope the state will treat the people who live in ky, like they treat residents out west. (they have a better preference, and they do not pay 500.00 for a bull tag.) i have been hunting colorado, resident bull tag roughly 40.00 non resident 500.00....
good luck on your elk hunt

I look for it to only get worse. I believe these animals have multiplied alot faster than the KDFWR ever expected, and I dont think they know how many they really are,I do alot of hunting in Breathitt co and Perry. The South fork area of Breathitt has alot of elk, looks like one big pasture I think every pine tree on the whole place is mangled.I think we will have alot of problems in the future. Elk are already tearing up peoples yards and trees and most of them are not afraid of you--I would hate to hit one!!!

If you don't think they will become a problem go visit certain areas of colorado and listen to the locals talk about them coming through their front doors during the winter. The fences they have to put around their hay is unbelievable. It looks like something you would see at a detention center. Minus the razor wire at the top. It will only get worst as #'s increase. Yes its great for us that don't have to deal with them but I can see why others that live in the area have problems with them.
