Guy's a few of the "Undertakers" and me just finished skinning/quartering a HUGE 6x7 that was hit by a local gentleman tonight just below my house.Thankfully , the man was o.k. but his S10 blazer was trashed. I'll try to post a pic of the bull tomorrow after work.

50" main beams
24" swords
11" circumferences
13" 3rds
Palmated tops

Why are you mad XI?

It's not like the guy ran over the thing on purpose I'm sure.

Stuff like this is going to happen more and more frequently as the population increases.

I dang sure wouldn't want one of them to step out in front of me.

For those of you that don't live in a zone 1 deer county, I suppose you will never understand what it's like to have to dodge critters every morning and every night that are capable of totalling your vehicle in one swipe. It's a white knuckle adventure every night this time of year on my 35 minute drive home.

It's no fun hitting any sizable critter that will do major damage to a vehicle. The best or worst (depending on who's looking at it) I ever did was three deer collisions in a years time. The last one was a new Toyota 4x4 I had owned exactly 28 days.

Do you live around Pineville? Close to Straight Creek?

Here's one of the pics. He green scored 365" gross, should be around 350" net. That's the man that hit it smoking the cigarette, he was still pretty shaken up. The pic was taken about 45 min. after the collision.

Yes, I did recognize him. He's one of the bulls I've seen from my kitchen window on the hill side. But fortunately, he's not the biggest in that group.

at 365 B&C (bumper or car) lol, it would be close to the 344 non typical state record!

The guy that hit it, kept it. I'm doing the taxidermy work for him. Here's a picture of "raven over easy" with the rack to help show just how massive they are. I green scored him at 363" non-typical net.

Good grief Quack! I'm not mad at the guy, it wasn't his fault! I just hate to see any animal get hit by a truck, espically an elk when the state is working so hard to establish an elk population. I know it is going to happen, I just hate to see it, and it really sucks for the driver!

I agree with quackrstacker(sp?)
Here in west ky, you have to stay on the lookout constantly! I drive 44 miles round trip to work each day, 5 days a week, and we see deer 2-3 days a week. I've been very lucky and have only hit 1 deer in my life. We joked that it was a reindeer because I never saw it and it landed on my hood, lol! I can't imagine dodging brutes like that! WOW!

I am suprised that they let him keep it! I would think that this practice will lead intentional elk collisions!

I'm quite sure that's not going to be a problem. Everybody I know around here values their life more than the possiblity of a elk steak or a set of horns that are probably too big to get into your house if you did have them.

That is a good looking elk there. What a shame for the elk and the mans vehicle.

When a Elk is killed, how do you get the thing out of the woods, surely you don't leave the meat behind to rot and feed the wild meat eaters...... Just curious because some of the shows on TV, show the people just taking the Head and leaving the rest of the animal in the field... What do you do with so much meat, I would guess give it away to people who like the taste, what does it taste like? Deer I would guess as well....

Elk is MUCH better than deer meat. It is one of the best tasting meats out there.

IMO elk is very similar to beef(they eat the same stuff, i.e. grass). I think that it is much better than whitetail venison, but for my taste, not quite as good as antelope which have been eating grass(I'm told that those who eat sagebrush aren't so good). Be that as it may, I have to be very generous in giving it away in order to use an elk in a year's time. My immediate family just can't consume one in that time.

You get it out of the woods pretty much any way you can. My preferred method is by dragging it out with a truck. Followed closely by dragging it out with a good four wheeler. And then there's always the time tested method of a bunch of high-school football players (a.k.a. The UNDERTAKERS) with some on each of their backs.
