So, without giving up too many secrets, who is hunting land, outside of the zone, that they know an elk is using?

Seems I usually hear a couple of people who have seen elk, outside of the zone, while bowhunting that are just itchin for gun season.

I've heard reports from my inlaws that the Turkeyfoot area of the DBNF in Jackson Co has some. I could be mistaken, but I think its on the border of Estill, Owsley, and Lee Co's.

Can someone tell me the reason your allowed to kill an elk if it gets outta zone?

According to the Department: They want to limit elk to the restoration zone due to conflicts with agricultural activities and to limit elk / human conflicts outside of the zone. If you do a little surfing you will find that these are some of the main sources of conflict in other elk reintroduction programs in the Eastern US. ie. Pennsylvania. Hope this helps answer your question.

On a side note: As the herd approaches the carring capasity of the restoration zone (10,000 elk within the zone is the goal) two things MAY or will happen. 1) More counties will be added to the restoration zone (based on management strategy and/or public support) or 2) A special Out of Zone control hunt will have to be established.

Look at the Bright side you can hunt Kentucky Elk NOW if you had just purchased a Elk permit application and of course are lucky enough to know where there is a big 6x6 hanging out-of zone!;)
