What type rifle and at what type distance?
Hunting or target?

Hunting rifle and as muck distance as i can get.
Say a couple hundred yards.
Been thinking about a 30/30.
Would also probably do some plinking too.

I wouldn't use a 30-30 for anything more than about 100 yds. The ballistics on a 30-30 aren't that great. I would recommend a 30/.06 if you want a rifle with open sights. There is a lot less bullet drop and a lot more stopping power if your aim is slightly off at longer distances.

I agree with .300 on that one. If you are looking for a 200+ yard iron sight rifle just because you want to hunt that style, I would go with a .45-70 and a Creedmore sight. Another gun to consider if you like lever actions would be a .444 with buckhorn style sights.
If you are looking at economics, I would go with a 30-06 or .270. Price is right on ammo.

well i was goin to chime in with a model 69 winchester, but since you want a high power,.30-06 would be a good choice.unless your like me and very seldom have more than a 100yrd shot, then i would go for the .30-30

for a 10 yd shot, I would pick the SKS for open sights.

I think any gun/calibre combination is much better than I can shoot at 200 yards with iron sights. Shucks, I can't see 200 yards anymore! I can't even see the sights - it's a sad thing to have to put a scope on a pocket knife.
