GSP
German Shorthair Pointers, I own 3 of these dogs. I would rather spend a day in the field running a dog than anything. I've owned about everything from a beagle, lab, black-mouth cur, redbone, walker and bluetick. Heck I even owned a setter once. (I felt sorry for this guy, he couldn't give it away, so I took it)
I'm sure Birdman will be on here later telling everyone about what a fine breed GSPs are.

I got mine from the fact that shot HighCountry bows for 10 years and too because I hunt so HIGH up in a tree, a lineman doesn't think anything about being 30 feet up there in the old oak. GSP, I have owned and hunted with Vizla, GSP, Pointers, English Setters, Gordon Setters, and Labs. I have also been in the show ring with each of those , I showed dogs for 22 years and showed horses for 20 years. I know a good dog and a good horse. Do you have any Huntibird bloodline in your GSP?

I have a 12ga shotgun that's almost a 100 years old that was left to me after my papaw passed away several years ago and the only thing it says on the gun is NitroHunter.
During my childhood papaw would always ask " If something happens to papaw is there anything of mine you would like to have" and I would always say the NitroHunter and a nickname was formed from that and thats what my username is on most forums I visit.
Big58cal
03-25-2002, 03:30 PM
When someone would ask me if I had a muzzleloader, I would tell them that I had a .58 cal. They would then say something to the effect of it being a big SOB, or too big, overkill, etc. I needed a user name for e-mail several years ago and I went through the usual....bowhunter, hunter, buckhunter, pseshooter, etc. Then I got to thinking about my guns......and the rest is history.
Hey Nitrohunter, I have my papaw's old 16 ga. single shot Nitro-Hunter.
Has a 32" barrel on it. A great squirrel getter.
Highbow, my dog has mostly Rawhide, Moesgaard, Greif's and Wildfire linage.
She is out of Muddy Creek kennels in MO.
I bred her with a line out of Rommel.

Mine is easy--I am a Certified Public Accountant. I used to be CPA Bowhunter, but I love beagles and turkeys also, so when the site changed format I just simplified it to CPA Hunter. Not many CPAs hunt, most play pasture pool and think I am some crazy red neck--if they only knew.

My user name was also easy. I have a 38Rossie with a stainless steel barrel. Really sharp looking. Got it from Don when we were having all those car jackings in 1992 around Bedford and Mitchell, Ind. So that is how I became rosie38special. It is also easy to remember. Now that Don is gone I also have his 38Taurus. When I go out in the woods I strap them on and go ride the 4 wheeler and if I see a snake or a bad dog then I just open fire and let them lay where they are. Have a lot of fun a the shootin bench and target practice. Then I get out my 22 rifle and shoot it for a while. Sure do waste a lot of shells but who cares I am having fun and getting in some practice. I am going to get me a 410 but not sure what brand will just have to go to my gun dealer and see what he has.

Thanks KSP965; If I understand right you are or where a police officer. Is this correct? Oh well thats ok I have no problem with that. My first husband and I got married in 1963 and were married almost 23 years. He was in the Navy for 8 years and in the Kentucky National Guard in Cynthiana for almost 10 years, and also worked almost 10 years for the Associated Press. Then my second husband was a self employed contractor and we were married allmost 15 years till he passed away March 8, 2003. Now my third husband is really great. He works full time in a factory every day and then comes home and takes care of his 100 acrea farm and his Haflinger horses and his 20 cows and 6 rabbits and 6 dogs. Me I work full time in a nursing home as a Qualified Medication Aide. He works days and I work 2nd shift and don't get home till around 10Pm and he is asleep cause he gets up at 4 am every morning. We lead a very busy life. I work every other weekend and when I am off we ride our 4x4 out here on the farm.Yes I would say I am very busy and I could go on and on the places I have been and saw while in the Navy and with the Associated Press and also some large tails of when he was in the guard. Just ask and I'll tell you. You all have a great day and I need to get off here soon time for me to go to work.

My forum name: I bought a farm several years ago in Bulter County and invited most of my friends down to hunt, as time went on, my friends kept calling it different names like sin city, love ranch, devils elbo. As the hunting got better and better ever year, my dad and brother named it Watkins Big Buck plantation (WBBP) so they could tell everyone that "they" owned part of it. They don't own any, but the name stuck.

squirrelsniper
02-16-2004, 04:09 AM
I used to squirrel hunt all the time when I was younger and I still enjoy hunting tree rats, even though I don't get to do it as often, so that's where I got "squirrel". However, the way I usually hunt is slightly different than how most people do it. Most people hunt one feeding area at a time from a range of 25-40yds. I live in an area that has several fairly large wooded hills, so I find where some of the feeding areas are, then I sit on one of the opposing hillsides and I can watch across the valley. By doing this, I can watch a larger area and keep an eye on two or three feeding areas at the same time. Of course this requires taking shots at greater distances than most squirrel hunters ever get a chance to try. For this reason, I use only accurate, heavy barreled rimfires, high magnification scopes, and I have a bipod attached to help with the most difficult shots. "Sniper" sounds kind of strange when you're talking about hunting squirrels, but it seemed like a catchy term that pretty well explained how I hunt them.
I first picked my name a few years ago though, back when I started visiting various hunting and shooting forums. I've kept using "squirrelsniper" because that's the name people have come to know me by. However, after all the "sniper shootings" getting nationwide fame in the media, I've wished several times that I had chosen a name that didn't have the word "sniper" in it, because some people now get the wrong idea when they see the word "sniper". When I picked my name, it was done with a sense of humor in mind, because most people will agree that sniping squirrels sounds a bit ridiculous. Now that I've used the name for quite a while, I refuse to change it just because a few people can't lighten up and see the humor in it. For those that live in the politically correct world, you can just think of me as "Long Range Squirrel Hunter"[;)]

What do you think of your so called neighbors using your dogs for target practice? My dog Muggs and George's dog Black both about 3 years old run and play out here and hunt rabbits. Muggs is or should say was part beagle and Black was a lab and something. Anyhow they came up missing when they were called for feeding time around 5 Pm on the 16th. No dogs. So I just thought they were out hunting and would be here when I got home from work at 10 PM. Still no dogs. Do I found out what has maybe happened to them and I don't like it one dang bit and I also think that is very low of your neighbors to do what they have done in the past and still continue to do. Have only been here since July with George and then we got married in Tenn in Nov of last year. So our dogs became a family also. I am going to get on our 4 wheeler and take my 22 rifle and go look for them and I really don't think I will find them alive. If I do find them and they are dead then I really don't know what I will do. At this moment I am very upset over people being so dang stupid. They have sheep and they get over here and cross the fence. So I could very easliy have mutton for supper. But I won't do that cause I am not that cruel and I wont' drop to the level of stupid people. Their day will come when they will reap what they sow and I hope it hits them really hard and I won't even feel sorry for them. Maybe I am wrong on feeling like this but what is mine is mine and I don't harm anyone and why did they pick on our dogs? Guess some people just sit and think of ways to harm things or whatever. Dogs will do what is in their nature and they were just running rabbits and they did not know they could not go on the next farm. The dogs can't read cause they had not been shown how yet. Oh well, enough on that but those folks will get their reward and not by me. Hope they rot in H____.

I hate to hear that about your dogs rosie38special I hope you find them well. I was going home from my Buddies house one night and rounded a shape curve and seen this little pup running right for me I locked it up but couldn’t stop in time. This pup was about half the size of your foot. Thinking some little kid just got this dog as a present so I couldn’t just leave it in the road so I went to all the houses around there looking for the owner. I spent about 30 or 40 mins looking. but could not find them so I took the pup home and barried it. man I hated that[:(]

Thanks BigBadDog; I found Muggs down below the house one day and I talk my husband in to letting me keep her. I had to have my cocker put to sleep April of 2000 and she was 13 years old. So he did say I could. So I took her to the vet and she only weighed 4 lbs that was May of 2000. I said I never would get attached to another dog again but guess what. She was a good girl and did what I said most of the time,. Don died March of 2003 and me and Muggs became really close. Then I met George in July and got married in 2003 and muggs and I moved in with him. Anyhow I sure do miss her meeting me when I come in from work at night. I work 2nd shift at a nursing home. She was always there to meet me. The other dog belonged to George and she was a Lab mixture all black and that was also her name, Black. Oh well I sure hope the people that did that rot in H___. I pretty well know for sure who did it but why?
ksp965
02-21-2004, 06:49 AM
Rosie, I sure don't mean to cause you any hurt, but let me go over a few things in your post. First, you say that your dogs have not returned. So you think they have been killed, and think your neighbors have killed them, you don't know for sure. Second, you say your neighbors have sheep. Third, you say your dogs run loose when you are not at home. Fourth, you say your dogs only run rabbits. Fifth, you say your dogs go upon your neighbor's property.
When we are not with our dogs, we don't know what they run. There is a natural instinct with dogs to run sheep. Those people who raise sheep and goats are very protective because dogs will kill and maim their livestock in short order. I had goats. When a thunderstorm grounded out the electric wire one day, by the time I got there after work, I found all my goats (five head) with their throats torn out and other damage. I like dogs but as a farmer it is my duty to protect my live stock from prededation. Dogs will do what dogs do when you are not with them. It is a dog owner's duty to keep their dogs penned up and/or on their own property except when the dog owner can be with them to supervise them. Go to your neighbors and ask them if they have seen your dogs. You may get an answer. I hope it is one of good news. When you find your dogs and if they are alright, pen them up so you don't have to worry about them and neither will your neighbors.
Rosie, since you asked what we think about your dog situation, here is my answer.
Put your dogs up and keep them on your own property 24/7. Letting your dogs run loose and enter someone elses property is violating your neighbors rights. If you don't have enough room for your dogs to roam, go buy some more property or sell the dogs.
Nothing infuriates me more than to be turkey or deer hunting and then to have a dog run through my property ruining my hunting that I have invested so much money and time in. You are right, the dogs, don't know any better, but the owner's should.
There are times when hunting dogs such as beagles or coon hounds get lost and have crossed my property, that is understandable. I usually catch the lost hunting dogs and call the owners, but it is not acceptable for yard dogs to chase livesock/game on your neighbors property-ever.

This time of year I do lots of trapping to help pass the time from deer season to turkey season. My method of choice is a snare, it will catch anything out there. Therefore my name is snareman.

QS4570, What are the main types of game that you all hunt in Kansas. I assume deer, but what else?

ksp965, use to give most game hell! Shot many a pheasant and quail in my day. Prairie chicken used to be a favorite also. Ducks, back before they made us use steel shot. Must just be getting old or something cause I just don't get out and do it anymore. Still deer hunt and shoot those crows though.

Yeah, I'm getting old too. I always wanted to go pheasant hunting, but never got the chance. I hunt waterfowl, hunt at turkey hunting, and occasionally will hunt rabbits and bullfrogs, but thats about it anymore.

Wish you could get a chance at pheasant, still stirs the ole blood when I see one. Got one that hangs out behind the house that I swore I was gonna get this year, just kept forgetting about him though. Have you got alot of bullfrogs down there? As for turkey, we're getting more and more of them around here. Shot a jake behind the house last spring.
.45-70, were is home to ya in Kansas? I used to hunt out of Junction City. We hunted SW through Abilene, mostly North in Washington and Cloud counties. Any idea how the quail faired this year? I've not been there in 2 years. Population was hurting bad then. Pheasant were doing fine.

gsp, Arkansas City, Kansas is where I hail from. You've done some traveling to get to some hunting here. Been up in that Junction City area a time or two myself. Wasn't hunting though. As for quail, haven't been out and about to see how they're doing. Just don't believe it's as good as it used to be though. East of Ark City used to be some fine quail hunting.
Looked at a map, you live in OK![:D]
Quail never will be what they were anywhere.[V][V]
One of the biggest shame's on mankind in my book.
I hope to make it back out there again soon. My nephew has a place to try some quail shooting in OK that I'm trying to nail down.

Yeah, we have a lot of bullfrogs. My dad left me part of my grandfather's pay fishing lake. It was built in the 50s and the head of the watershed has been strip mined, so it is almost all filled up but is a heaven for frogs. Also, a lot of stripmine ponds have a lot of frogs. Enough for several good messes a year. Catch and eat beats catch and release everytime, (for frogs).[:D]

To all you fine folks that have responded to my dogs not being here. Well, first went to the neighbors and ask if they have saw our dogs. They said no and replied they did not know what dogs looked like. Bull. They drive by here everyday and I wasn't born yesterday. I WILL not do anything to their animals and I will not stoop to their standards on stupidity. Yes, I agree that dogs will mess up deer hunting and they do not need to run loose. Our other dogs are getting a new pen for them to take up redidence for the rest of their lives. They will be let out to run as long as we are there to watch them. There will be a lock on the gate to the pen and if any one of them are harmed while in pen when we are gone then I will go to the police. They will be on OUR property. Now what about their dogs running loose is that ok for them and no one else in the neighbor hood? I don't think so. There is a state tropper that has a BIG German Shephard dog and he jogs by here every day. His dog does not always listen to his commands. We have 2 small Chiauaha dogs that are 27 years old and when we are at home we let them out and they are where we can see them. This hugh dog will come onto our property and chase the little dogs. So what do you do in that case? The neighbor said they were going to fix there part of the fence where there sheep will not come over here and that is fine. But their dogs still come over here all hours of day and night and they do nothing. I WILL NOT DO ANYTHING TO THEM BUT THEY SHOULD PUT THEIR DOGS UP IF ALL HAS TO DO WITH THEIR FAMILY PETS. I really thank you all for all the advice and I WILL abide with the law and they need to do the same. In the mean time we still have not saw our dogs. In the past, I have been told that people has bragged on killing dogs and taken them and threw them in the river. But again, I WILL NOT DO ANYTHING TO THEIR ANIMALS. T H A T I S A P R O M I S E. Hope this is what you wanted me to say and do and I W I L L keep my word and in return they need to be made aware that is what all the people around here is going to do.

I hunted for years and years without getting a buck. I had however shot several does. I gave myself this name just to take a jab at myself before my friends could! They love to kid me about my inability to take a buck, ts all in fun. However they can't kid me abut this anymore, I took my first buck this fall. Im still waiting to get the mount back. I posted a pic of this buck in the deer hunting forum under the title " finally got a buck" I think its on the second page now. Let me know what ya think

Sorry about your dogs Rosie. I don't think anyone should shoot a dog. I have however had many hunts ruined by free roaming dogs. Didn't you say in an earlier post that you carried a 22 for shootin things like cats and dogs?

Rosie, the same rule applies to all. Your neighbors need to keep up their dogs also. Most areas have some type of animal control officer that can be contacted to gather free roaming dogs, (or sheep, for that matter). A pet owner is liable for damages caused by their pets to other people's property. I told you of the need to pen your dogs, not as punishment to you, but only as good intentioned advice on how to keep and enjoy your dogs for a long time. I'm sorry if you took it any other way.

Yes i did say i have weapons and thank you all for your answeres and like I said the neighbors do NOT keep their dogs tied and if they chase cows and horses then they need to be told to contain their animals also, I have done that and they do to. I am just protecting what is ours and they need to keep theirs up as well. Anyhow I think this subject has been resvolved and all is peacful in the neighbor hood. Now we can go on and live in the area with no worries cause they have been told to put theirs up and fix their fence. I will not stup to being stupid like a lot of people are. I like to be friends with everyone and not have any problems and all needs to abide by the rule also. No hard feelings to you all cause I asked questions for some ideas and help and you all did that. So I am ok with all that has happened and I dont hold a grudge on things. So thanks again.

I have given up looking for our dogs and the other dogs of ours are tied up just like you all said I should do,. But no one else has done their animals like that., Only thing I have left to say is hope that Muggs and Black are running and playing like they used to do and have a good time since they met with a accident or what ever happened. I will miss them and this subject I will close and not say anything else cause no one else seems to care. BYE MUGGS AND BLACK
