Here is a picture of the "Elk Undertakers" from the Knott/Floyd County area. I can't say enough about how helpful and hardworking these guys were on Saturday. I met some super nice people this weekend and with two big bulls on the ground by 8:30AM Saturday morning these guys rolled into action and offered to help in any way possible. These guys were relentless "all day" long from helping with gutting, dragging, skining, quartering, etc. and they did it all for free to help their fellow man. What great people!!!!

Elk hunting here is still in its novelty stage. People still want to be in on the action and see it. I saw one of the best bulls I've ever seen taken this morning. You'll be hearing about it I'm sure. Not that their not good folks, most hill folk are and will go the extra mile to help, but as time goes by and more tags are available, hunters will be more on their own.

Which brings up a point. The elk project has some work to be done before they issue 1500 tags. This strip pictured here got hammered pretty hard this weekend. As one c/o stated, "it got a little crowded". We discussed where 1500 people were going to hunt. Good question. I only hope that I can draw an at large bull tag sometime in the near future, because public access areas will be picked to death over the next 5-10 years. This could be a snag for the project.

I would like to send out a very BIG THANK YOU to all of the people that assisted in our hunt. I was and is a experience that I will cherish till the day the GOOD LORD calls me home! I don't care where you go in this world you will not find any better people!

A very special thanks goes out to Sam "screamin6x6" Taylor, for which none of this would have been possible without his knowledge and expertise!

I would also like to send out a Special thanks to forum member Marty "mcdenny" for his excellent calling and aggressive tactics that help to seal the deal on my 7X7 Bull.

God Bless you ALL!

Good Luck & Good Hunting!

mcdenney is absolutely right. Those guys were relentless, including mcdenney. They took care of every detail, and most of all everyone one had a great day.

By the way, just wanted to let mcdenney know that we found the elk processor about 11:30 last night and the reward will be ready on Tuesday. Thanks for the suggestion.

CM12 you are right on target. Combine the hunters with the multiple truck loads of CO's driving everywhere and glassing elk everywhere and it made it pretty crowded and dangerous. Now I don't have a problem with CO's doing their job but when some of these guys are out of the truck glassing elk with bull hunters in sight, I have a real problem. As a matter of fact their eagerness to see the elk cost one hunter a monster bull not to mention the fact that they were right in line behind the elk hunters. Lucky for them the hunter saw them (without any orange I might add) and backed out without shooting. Not a good position to be IMO.

As for access, you could tell a huge difference this year in the amount of pressure. Not sure how the locals and the KDFWR across all 16 counties are going to handle this going forward but this is the biggest issue I see facing the lucky hunters going forward.

Gee, the elk hunts are beginning to sound like the WMA quota hunts -- and we all know how much fun those are.

Not counting the site seekers!!! And what of the two helper regulation? I saw various groups of 4/5 that were hunting. I also saw people posted on every point/ridge spotting for others.

Per the elk info, "Drawn limited entry area elk hunters are permitted two assistants during their hunt." It doesn't comment on at-large tags but really you should keep people at a minimum and two assistants is about right. I know with Raven, his dad and I, it worked out great.

I wasn't trying to downplay your generosity Sam, as I often have to say, what I think and what I type don't always come out the same. As for being reported, don't sweat it. I just watched the news about NKorea and their Nuke test. With the fact that some people/countries work 24/7 to destroy us in mind, a show of kindness and helpfulness looks good. In fact thats' exactly why they will never beat us, when it gets right down to it, cause of good ole country boys all across this land that when needed step up to the plate. Cong. to all those guys you helped. I had in mind of stopping by but went to Hazard and hung out.

Nothing wrong with helping someone.

McDenny, I agree with 100%, but to me these guys were more like the Green Berets. Those guys did everything and anything you asked them to do. They give their time, talent and sweat. Those fellas would drag an elk down a hill of brairs and sacrafice thier own flesh to trailer an elk. I sure feel like I made alot of friends this weekend. Thanks fellas you made it all possible!
