Raven and Parker's son both connected on nice bulls this morning. Big Nasty declined an iffy shot but should be tagged out this afternoon. More details and pics later.

Just got back from the Hazard vol. elk check station. Looks like the non-typical record has been bested by at least 10 points (unofficial). I perdict the typical will fall also. Saw some nice bulls with one excellent specimen from the Red Bird area. Pretty neat, kinda remeniscent of the old deer check stations. They weighed the bulls, rough scored them, etc.

I saw either raven or parker go by my house this morning, don't know which head was bigger, the one that was driving or the elk's head on the trailor. Cong.

Man, I need a tag.

I just wanted to give a little run down on my son’s hunt yesterday, and give a special thanks to screamin6x6 and his family and neighbors. There are truly some good people in Floyd and Knott Counties.

We got to our hunting site a little around 6:30 yesterday morning. screamin6x6 had us (my son, his twin brother, and myself) walk probably close to a half mile around to the side of a ridge. He quickly had us on a small herd of 8 to 10 cows and herd bull. screamin6x6 ranged the bull at about 276 yards. At that distance there was still not enough daylight to tell what kind of rack he had without some good binocs. Upon further inspection he was a nice one. However, screamin6x6 didn’t want my son to take the shot because down at the other end of the ridge there were some hunters who were there before us. Therefore within about an hour after getting out of the truck both my boys had seen a nice bull and learned a valuable lesson in hunter ethics.

We decided to walk back toward the trucks and head out in another direction. While walking toward the trucks we notice another small herd on another ridge off to the left of where we parked. This herd had about 6 to 10 cows, a herd bull, and three satellites. We worked our way down one ridge and back up the other one in about twenty minutes. When we got to the top of the ridge that the second herd was on they weren’t anywhere to be seen.

screamin6x6 had us stay put while he walked about 40 to 50 yards over to the edge a little drop-off on an old logging road. He indicated that there were some elk and motioned for us to slowly work our way to him. When we finally got to him we saw that the herd bull and cows had disappeared. However, the three satellites were on another small ridge. Two of them were on the logging road and the other was in edge of the trees rubbing his heart out. The one in the trees was closest but didn’t present a good shot. The biggest of the three was next and then the third one was on back.

screamin6x6 ranged the biggest one at about 220 yards and asked my son if he thought he could make the shot. My son said yes, and we got him in a seated position with a bipod. He took aim and fired. We saw dust fly behind the elk and knew he had shot over its back. However the elk was just a little startled and didn’t make an attempt to leave. My son quickly chambered another round and fired. We could tell by the elk’s reaction he was hit. He turned and ran off the logging road and over the side of a ridge.

It took us about five minutes to get over to where the elk had been standing. We were looking for some blood trail but couldn’t find any. So we had to carefully work our way down the steep ridge to the timberline, which was about 30 yards down. As we go almost to the timberline screamin6x6 notice something lying right in the edge of briar thicket. Upon further inspection the elk had piled up right there. He was nice 5x6 with some really good character to his rack. He ended up weighing about 450 pounds dressed.

When the elk was field dressed we were able to determine that my son had hit the bull in the back portion of his front right leg. The bullet from the 7mm-08 took out about a fourth of his heart and exited right behind his left front leg. Not bad for an eleven year old.

Sorry for being so long winded, but I’m just a little excited. I can honestly tell you that screamin6x6 knows where the elk are and how to get you to them. And the most amazing thing is that he did all of this out of the kindness of his heart and just to be part of the elk hunt. He is truly a special person. If my other son or I are luck enough to get drawn next year, I sure know who I am going to contact.

Don't know who killed it, but I saw a nice bull in the bed of a truck going through Manchester yesterday, it was a nice one. Congrat's to whoever took it.

James can get three shots off with a bolt action, (with accuracy), as fast as anyone I've ever seen. I think his new nickname should be "Lee Harvey".LOL.
