Since I'm only going to be able to hunt the 1st 2 days to start with (Im scheduled to work Monday and Tuesday). I'm going with the Model 700. I consider this a once in a life time opportunity for me to hunt elk and I want to make the most of it! 2 days to GIT-R-DUN!

i have plenty of vacation time to hunt all 7 days, plus access to an area off limits to gun hunters, I saw several elk in that area 2 weeks ago, one big 6x7

Raven.. What area were you picked for? If it is Begley you shouldn't have any problem being done in 2 days.

We just got a portable defibrillator for use in our office, just might commandeer that for the hunt. Too early to put any clout in a forecast (especially precipatation) but right now they're calling for 20% chance of rain, high of 69 and low around 48 for opening day. Those are about average temps for this time of year, sure most of us would prefer it a bit cooler but I'll take that forecast.

Anything but rain like we have this past weekend will be fine. Of course it is much more enjoyable with cooler temps and helps with getting the meat out, etc.

Forum member Parker and his son,and me,(along with my elk undertaking crew), went out Sat. morning in the driving rain, cold temps, and heavy wind to do a little scouting and heard 4 or 5 bugles, saw 6 cows, 3 raghorns, and a pretty nice 6x7. If we have weather's any better than that for opening morning, there should be some bulls on the ground opening evening.

Elk are not like whitetails, they will be out of the timber if it rains.

As Screamin' said, my son and I went out scouting with him last weekend. Even with the weather it was well worth the trip. My son (11 yrs old), who has the tag, was excited before we went, and he's even more excited now. The whole family is looking forward to it.

Mountain Man you are correct, the lack of rain just makes it more enjoyable for the hunters and myself. :) I hunted in a couple down pours last year and called in a big 6x6 and saw several other elk as well. I don't particularly like hunting in a hurricane though. :)
Probably the worst thing might be a heavy fog. My guess was it was foggy this morning in elk country. I was so close last year to a herd of elk that I could smell them and hear them chewing it seemed but I never saw them.

You guys are really getting me fired up. Although I have to wait a week longer and drive 1500 miles one way these elk stories are getting the blood flowing. Except you sorry dogs don't have to deal with the 10,000 feet altitude :D
