I am thinking of black powder hunting with my revolver. It is a replica 1860 army revolver - .44 caliber. Does anyone with experience believe it would not, or could not be effective from a range of 10 yards? Accuracy is not an issue, I am interested in an informed opinion on the performance of a round ball with a maximum load behind it, exiting an 8" barrel.

At 10 yds. it will blow a BIG hole!

I shot a small buck with a Navy 44 a few years back. He walked under my tree & he was about 6 yards from the end of the barrel. Had 25 grains of 3F and .454 round ball. He piled up less than 40 yards away - good thing as there was no exit hole and the only blood was around where he fell. Also shot a doe at about 15 yards with a Ruger Old Army loaded with 35 grains of 3F and a .457 round ball, but never found her, rained a couple of hours later & I lost the trail. Have not had the opportunity for another shot.

Thanks for the input. I figure shot placement will be important. I love to shoot that pistol, and am looking forward to christening it.
