Anyone had any experience on the 17 cal?

Yes I have, and I'll tell you it is way too much for frog season. So be careful!
You might want to consider a .22

I noticed Ruger is making 5 models now. I would like trying one, just don't want to buy a rifle that eats the wallet to shoot.
As of now when me and my daughter shoot .22s, we have gone through 1500 rounds in a weekend.

The cartridges aren't too bad. It's a necked down .22 Mag case. The calibur is pretty sweet. I've shot an Anshutz (sp.) in .17 cal. I've shot crows with it at well over 100 yds. Been thinking of getting one for squirrel hunting.

I bought the Savage 503 bolt action pistol......avg groups around 1" at 100 yards with a 4x scope, best group can be covered with a dime. Haven't shot any critters yet, but thinking of taking it squirrel hunting. Fun gun to shoot.

Hey Massive Horns, the best thing I have found for bullfrogs is a .22 short hollowpoint. The idea is to transfer as much shock to their nervous system as you can to paralyze them until you can recover them. Hot bullets like the .17 is going in the wrong direction, don't you think? Also, the .17 is suppose to be priced similar to .22 magnum ammunition. Anyone bought any yet?

Hey Ksp,
I was joking with our new comer Big Antlers. He is Kin to me. I like those .22 CCI with half the powder in them. It really puts a thud on those bullfrogs.

Cool, sorry to butt in. But since I have, I started hunting frogs about 20 years ago. Since then I have noticed that the vegetation is a lot more grown when season opens than it used to be. Have you noticed that? Wonder if the DFWR ever consider moving up the season to coincide with the closing of Turkey season?

Back to the original question, the new fangle .17 are rimfires. the other is a necked down, .222 mag. case. It's capable of about 4000 fps. and will flat turn groundhogs inside out. I know of several deer killed in their tracks with the 25 gr. bullets. When the .17 first came about, P.O. Ackley was the guy behind it. He used it on wild horses and several species of African game and never more than one shot a piece. I had one mde on the .222 case and it was a tack driver. Very pleasant to shot, but you have to hand load the ammo.

Does anyone know where I can find a current list of firearms available in .17 caliber?

I was out shooting hedge apples the other day with a .17 and a 22 mag. Seemed the 22 mag made them explode a little more than the .17. The big hoopla is how fast the .17 is and it shoots flatter than the 22 mag. The shells that I have found are $10 a box of 50 compared to $7 for the 22 mag. I'm not that impressed with it.

If she wasn't mad about that, she'd be mad about something else.Let's go huntin.

Marlin makes the .17, as well as Reminton, and Anshutz (sp?). I've checked into the Marlin because you can get an after-market trigger that's pretty sweet. They've got a blued barrel with black composite stock, and a laminated stock with a stainless barrel. I'm going to get the stainless. They're about $250. The composite is a little cheaper.

The NEF is a nice cheap rifle in 17 HMR. I paid $150 for mine, put on a $100 8x Redfield Tracker and was getting 3/4 inch groups at 100 yds. Have shot the Ruger 9622 with a scope but it wouldn't shot as well. They say that the bolt actions all shoot very well, but I haven't tried one of those. Have shot a Taurus Tracker in 17 and it seems to do pretty well, as good as open sights and I can shoot, hope to try it with a scope soon. If there is a kick to the NEF it is a heavy gun with a bull barrel. I did try one of the new Sweet 17 scopes by BSA and it did what they said it would do and it isn't an expensive scope.

I've heard that Ruger is going to come out with a version of their 10/22 in .17 caliber. If this is so, I can't find anything on their web site. Does anyone know anything about it?

Don't know about Ruger but other companies are selling conversion kits with the barrell to switch to the 17.
