Just say, (Not that it's me[:)]) A guy had a ML, and theres been a bullet in the gun for SEVERAL years, Is there anything that can be done? Is the rifle fixable? It's been 4 or 5 years.

All you have to do is get a bullet puller at a cost of maybe $3 and get it out. If there's powder behind it, you might not want to count on the gun to be worth using.

If the gun was real clean when that load was put down the barrel. You might not find much damage in barrel except in the breach area. About all you can do is pull the bullet and check with a light or remove the breach plug and check that way. Black powder is not that bad till fired so you might stand a chance of saving the gun. If you see lots of pitting in the barrel then it is probably not worth trying to save.

Before using the bullet puller, remove the nipple and soak in water for 15 minutes. You still have a potential live charge behind the bullet. I have seen charges that were left in the barrel from the previous season still fire on the first try. Use extreme caution!!

I doubt a bullet puller will pull the bullet. Hopefully, your gun has a removable breech plug, and you'll have to use extreme force to knock the bullet out. There's a good chance this gun is junk. If the barrel had been shot, it's surely pitted badly.

You could try the CO2 discharger. They're pretty good. To go a little further on what M.I.B. said, you need to take the nipple out and soak the barrel in water for at least an hour or two to make sure the powder gets good and wet. People have been shot with their work rods when trying to pull balls. Don't really know what causes it, but they will go off sometimes.

Best thing to do is to pull the breech plug and push the bullet and powder out the back way. That way you can also see if there is any damage to the barrel.

Thanks, I haven't yet decided what to do. I'll probally pull the breech plug and do it that way.

P., you mean your friend hasn't yet decided what to do.[;)]

Hopefully you can remove the nipple and you have a breech plug that can be removed. This would allow the powder or pellets to come out the back end, then you could try to push the bullet down as was suggested. I keep my nipple and breech plug wrench with me in the field as I have had to do this in the field before. I made the mistake once of not cleaning my gun the night before and when I pulled the trigger on a doe, I simply snapped a cap. I kept the gun pointed at the ground to make sure it wasn't a slow discharge. After several minutes, I removed the nipple and breech plug. This let my pyrodex pellets fall out then I pushed the bullet out the back of the barrel and run a few spit and swabs through the barrel. Didn't get another shot that day, but it fired fine once I got back to the house. Needless to say, I have since thoroughly cleaned the gun before and after each hunt.

Dear Mrs. Beyer;

I am sorry to hear of the tragic accident your husband suffered while helping his friend fix his ML. While this is a terrible time of grief for you, I hope I am not out of line in letting you know that P. had wanted me to have all of his old hunting stuff in the event that something happened to him. Please forward everything to me as soon as possible, as hunting season is approaching.

Sincerely,
Nimrod777

P.S. Keep his friend's ML.

You can always take a shot, but you can never take it back.

Just FYI, The Gun is OK. Bullet actually fired out and the rifle was taken apart & cleaned. No damage visible!

I'll bet my "Buddy" sure is happy about that!

Last year during the late MZ season, I still had a powder charge and bullet left in the barrel after I got done hunting. I didn't want to "fire it out", since the bullets I shoot cost close to $1 each. Anyway, I finally got around to cleaning the gun in Sept. of this year. I pulled the breach plug and pushed everything out. Other than a little caking and compaction of the powder, everything was OK inside there. I'd be willing to bet that the gun would have still fired, and fired as true as always.
