Just curious... after returning from a 30+ year absence from the great state of Kentucky I have noticed not many fishermen out on the lakes an rivers this fall an winter. Fish are there to be caught for sure. I been catching bluegill & crappie most every day since Oct.

I think alot of them head to Dale Hollow or Lake Cumberland for bronzebacks. I know I try to go there a couple times and fish with minnows or float and fly is an excellent technique.

Tangle with the grizzly bear, it will cleanse the soul. FRED BEAR

Getting serious on these stripers at Cumberland. Plan to stay on them until mid- June, unless the water cools into the mid 40's.

Other than Dale Hollow and Cumberland down south, where is the winter bite. This will be my first winter in KY, moving from MO, so don't know the water. I live in northern Kentucky, so are there any good water up here to fish?

JAult , what we do sometimes when hunting slows. We fish the dams on the Ohio for sauger and walleye. We have fished early in year for stripers and white bass. This time of year we usually hit Meldhal dam in Bracken co just east of Foster on rt 8. You can fish from near or off dam against wall. What we tend to do is hike back old service road and fish just west of where the rocks hit the sand. Most of the time with us it's just something to do so we can get together and swap lies. At times though fishing is pretty good. -- We usually just pitch minnows out on dead line and sit back. Other have had pretty good luck working jigs and small spinners near rocks. Good Luck

Ky Hunter,
I started fishing for those stripers last May. How do you like to fish for them through the winter? Casting crankbaits is what I've heard most try at this time.
Thanks for any help.

jimgard,
Thanks for the help. I've never fished for sauger or walleye, but have caught some whites though. I'll check it out. I like to eat some fresh caught fish from the cold water. Most of my time in the winter is spent hunting, but it's nice to get out and catch some fish. I've heard walleye are pretty good eatin'. Do you know any hot spots for smallies and largemouth?

Thunderstorm. I prefer casting crankbaits at night on points and mud flats. Now seems to be the time for Sliver's and Little Macs, as well as the doll fly. As the water cools I will throw doll flies in the creeks during the day. You may want to start earlier than May(for night fishing) Mar has me throwing Bomber Long A's and the good 'ol Redfin.

JAult, Boone county is loaded with farm ponds, some of my best largemouths have come from them. Your also close to the back water at Big Bone to put boat or canoe in. We have done pretty good going all the way back in there in john boat and fishing riffles for largemouths or whites in spring. For smallies, we have caught a few at Mehldal dam in fall. Mostly we hit Licking river south of Locust pike park in the boat. We fish different riffles going south from there. We have also had pretty good luck drifting lines from riffle at Demossvile in main channel with a minnow, chub, or helgramite.
good luck

Tried them last night with no success. Rain and wind chased me early.

Ky Hunter,
Thanks for the info on your earlier post. Forgot to add that when I replied yesterday. I think I will duck hunt for awhile instead of fishing. Finally some cold weather.
