hey guys i am a younger guy and have just recently bought a remington 700 BDL in a .243. The reason i bought this gun in this caliber is because i will be able to varmint hunt as well as deer hunt with it but i was wanting ur guys opinion on what is the best round for varmint hunting then again best round for deer hunting, I know probably 80 gr for varmint and 100 for deer but what brand and points n stuff not really familiar with centerfire rifles since this is my first. thanks for all ur help

I like Remington Core-locts for deer hunting. They are not as expensive as some and have never let me down.

Depends if you handload or can get someone to load for you. You can buy bullets as light as 60 grains that will shoot well in a 243. So, if you want something fast amd flat, and highly explosive, go with a lighter bullet. If your after hides on foxes and yotes, they have bullets made for that. The 243 is very versitile and a good choice for what you want.

For deer, hunt with at least a 100 grain in a soft point. Plenty available in factory loads.

I shoot the PMC "whitebox" 100 grain Pointed soft point in mine. I switched from the corelock recently and tightened my group up a little. Both do a great job on whitetails.

I like the 100 gr. Remingtons. One of the best things about the .243, is the wide choice of ammo available for it. My son in law found some .243 ammo loaded with a 55 or 60 gr bullet but I don't remember whether it was Rem or Winchester. Definately a good versatile caliber.

I use a 6mmx284(hence my name), which uses the same bullets as your .243 All my ammo is reloaded so I can not speak for factory ammo, but I can get the 55gr ballistic tips going 4480fps and an 85 gr sierra bthp going 3740 fps. Both shoot very accurate and do well for me. The 55 or 60(forget now) I've used on groundhogs and such(mucho damage) and the 85 on deer and mule deer. Just if you use a bullet lighter the 100 gr for deer get a bullet with a solid base for penetration and it will work great for you!!

I am not positive but wouldn't this mean you would need to sight your scope in again every time you switched loads? Not that it is that big of a deal but just wanted to make sure you thought of this. I realize the lighter loads will shoot flatter, further but I would pick the best one for deer and use it for varmits also. This would eliminate re-zeroing and also increase the ammount of "real world" practice with your business load. This is all assuming that deer hunting is truly your main objective and varmit hunting is a side passion.
