What shells do you use in your 30-06 for deer hunting? I have never had a problem with the Winchester 165 gr. pointed soft-point. But, I want to try a couple different rounds this year. So what does everyone shoot?

I bought some Remington 150 gr. Core-Lokt PSP's today. 150 is really a minimum for me. I prefer a 165.

Reloads for us in all of our guns, We haven't killed a deer with factory for a long time. :)
For my Remington 700 30/06; I use a Hornady 165 gr SP(Spire Point) with H-4350 , win brass and win primers, very accurate, dependable and deadly! :D

Winchester, Remington or Federals in 165 grain. My Remington 700 isn't picky.

Several Walmarts in L'ville have the Federal Premium shells on Clearance for $7.00 Box. Best ammo I have used in my Rem 700. Typically this stuff is close to $30 a box.

If your rifle likes the one your using and the deer remain dead, why would you want to change?

Just to see how different loads perform. Most of my shots consist of 100 yds or less. But, I want to see the difference in performance at say 250 yds?

A HA! The greatest reason for doing something is because you want to. What guy can't experiment with his rifle?
Have a lot of fun, but when you decide on a new round, shoot enough of them to develop the confidence you have with your present round. There is no more important accuracy tool than confidence that your rifle will do what it's supposed to every time.
I like to play with my rifles, but when it comes to the "money gun", I'm superstitious about putting it into a different place in the rack.

I couldn't agree more. It's a good feeling when you pull up and put it on him and shoot and you know he's going down. Your not wondering what the outcome is going to be.
Remington 178 gr extended range.

150 gr Core-Lokt in my model 70, but then again its the only thing I've ever used in it. First box, last box... always the same, accurate, consistent performance.

Sierra 165 Gr Gameking SBT over 4064, Remington Brass, Winchester Primers = dead deer at as far as I have any business shooting at them.
But I agree it is great fun to try different loads and such in our rifles, even though we have good loads, I always think the next one might be the perfect one.

That's close to my /06 load, only I use H-4350 (more accurate/velocity in my Rem 700 than 4064) and a Hornady SP 165 .
IF you've not tried H-4350 in the ought six,(it's a bit slower that 4064, thus you can get more into the case safely, clean burning and Temp insensitive, which I really like, work up loads when it's hot or cold , and not worry about it)..."perfect" imho for the 165-180 grain bullets.
I think you'll be pleasently surprised! BTW it's also awesome in the 7mm-08 with the Hornady 139 grainers fwiw.....(for anyone shooing one) :)

guess i will add my 2 cents,,,,
i shoot a savage 30-06,,had it for years,,the only thing done to it is i worked the trigger a bit and did a custom camo job,,,i shoot reloads,,,,150 grain hornady sst's,,with 51 grains varget,,winchester primers and cases behind it,,it will shoot the same hole at 100,,,i bench shot it with that recipe and kept the target,,because i didn't even believe it,,

Remington Model 700 Synthetic
Tried them all: Remington, Federal, Winchester, Hornady. My gun prefers Winchester Ammo.
For Deer: Winchester 150gr. Silver Tips (Factory ammo)
For Elk: Winchester Supreme 180gr. AccuBond CT (Factory Ammo)
For me the 06' is the best all around Calibre.

Remington 165 gr. core-lok in my tikka in 30-06. I tried about 6-7 other shells and the core-loks were still the best.
