there was a post not long ago about people paying to hunt penned animals and referred to it as "canned hunts" my question is... how do you all feel about pay-lakes? is this not the same principal,or is it? what are your thoughts

That's a good ethical question to ponder.
I think that if you are fishing a pay lake just to catch fish to eat, why not. If you are hunting a deer in a pen to have venison, why not.
If you follow the trout truck around to catch trout, because you enjoy catching trout to eat, why not (Heck, I've done this one a bunch of times).
But PLEASE don't use such a facility for "trophy" status.
How would you feel if you knew the next "world record" bass or "world record" B&C deer came from a cage?
If you are doing it for food only, help yourself. It's no differance than Kroger except it is a little fresher. But just leave the ego in the truck and remember. You are not competing against mother nature on a level playing field.

Following the trout truck was a big event when I was going to school at Morehead. We would know about when they were due to release and keep an eye out for them. When they dumped at one place and there were a bunch of people around, we would follow them to the next. Hey, beats going hungry.
I hope you fellows that go to MSU and post here don't even consider such a thing. That was many years ago. Gosh, I miss those times.

Hey wont be the first time I have thought about following the truck, in fact we have got our eyes on several spots around Morehead and Cave Run. We already have the grill ready. With a little help from the truck I hope Xcutter, Oxmos and my self won't go hungry this spring. HAHA

Great White, Xcutter, Oxmos
I enjoy reading y'alls post. Some of the best times of my life were spent at ole Mo'head. You guys help me relive some good old days. Fishing the spillway, squirrel hunting Clack mountain, grouse hunting the clear cuts at DBNF, riding inter-tubes off the dam at Cave Run when the snow is on. Trout fishing, swimming in Eagle lake, panty raids, uhhhhhh getting off the subject here...... better close....

Hey GSP when you were at Morehead, where was some of the hot spots for deer hunting and trout fishing. We already have a couple but we are wanting to find more. I also have good news, we are trying to get a hunting club started here at Morehead. I hope it takes off. I also have to say that we have never got a chance to do any grouse hunting but we have had quite a few give us a good fright, when making out way out to our hunting spot over by the radio tower in clearfield. I sure would like your help in find some new spots to try out.

To me there is nothing wrong with following the fish truck. Because if you think about it all fish are "canned". But shooting a deer or something inside a fence would be like a trip to the farm for some angus. Just the way I look at it.

Great White,
I posted some directions to Laurel Creek under the Trout Fishing in Eastern KY post. This is about 20 miles from MSU. It was always my favorite place to trout fish.
I always did most of my deer hunting in Morgan county. Remember I am talking 1977 now.
As for close to MSU. At the top of Clack mountain on 519 turn right, (this road goes over to 1274 that runs beside Cave Run), about half way across there was an old rock quarry. We used to hunt and shoot there.
I have seen a couple of nice bucks there but never killed on. The point that drops off behind that comes in at Scotts creek (where the marina is located) there is about a millon acres there to hunt. The best hunting was across the road from the quarry, remember I'm talking 20+ years ago. Don't forget Tater knob tower and buck creek in the primative area for bow hunting.
As for squirrel, any of the points out that road or the radio towers at Clearfield.
Grouse were good at the towers also, though the clear cuts are probably squirrel woods now.
Wish I was back, don't you fellows forget to get a good education. It does make a differance. Also have the time of your lives. You are living your "Good ole days" now.

Gsp

when you say that the tower in Clearfield use to be loaded with grouse, trust me it still is and squirrel too. There has been many trips that the Great white and I have gone out there and had the "Fire" scared out of us by those Grouse. They sound like Hellecopters.

Thats some rough thick ground out there but the good thing that I saw about the grouse is they were all near the road. In fact some of the birds we saw sitting on the ground way before they flew. I don't think they get bothered with that much.

Thanks for the info. I’ll be up chasing them. Just so you know though, those well-behaved grouse are just like those tame, well-behaved deer you see, BEFORE season starts. Grouse are one of the most humbling creatures on Earth. They can embarrass you bad. One of their favorite tricks is to wait until you climb a steep hill and flush wild just out of range. They sail across a deep hollow and wait until you cross it and climb another hill. Then they will flush just out of range and fly back to were you were just left! Come to think about it, grouse hunters are some pretty, warped people. I should know too, cause I R 1!!!

My Papaw lives over in Carter county and use to hunt them all the time. He said they were starting to get thin. He's pretty much gotten out of it now. I had him talked in to going out to Clearfield this passed season though.
