Are the Winchester Supreme Ballistic Silvertips too fragile to take shoulder shots on whitetails?

I like to go for the shoulders and I did'nt know if they would have enough gusto (without blowing up) for that and still exit.

I have used Silvertips in my 7mm. It left one heck of a hole in the Heart / Lungs area. Deer dropped in its tracks. If you shoot the shoulder you will waste a lot of meat with the silvertips.

I always liked the Old Style Silvertips the best. These "New Age" Silvertips are just "Ballistic tips" with a silver colored plastic point.

I hit a doe in the shoulder this past season with a Win. Supreme Nos Accubond and it destroyed the whole front quater. The bullet still gained extreme penetration and exited behind the rib cage in front of the hind quater.

They will penetrate enough to do the job but you may ruin all the shoulder meat and they aren't likely to exit on close range shots as the velocity will lead to fragmentation. If you plan to take close range (100yds or less) shoulder shots, I'd stay away from the poly tipped bullets. They will do an awesome job of dropping the deer, but you'll make a mess of a good portion of meat.

On close shots with alot of velocity I think they expand and maybe even come apart very rapidly. I always try for a heart lung shot and if its a very close shot with my 7mm short mag the entry hole is larger than the exit but there is nothing but mush on the inside.
I'm not sure its a great shoulder or neck shot bullet especially with alot of speed but I cant say for sure because I havent taken that shot. It would for sure ruin the intire shoulder because I usually loose the opposite shoulder on the ones I shoot.

In my .270; I use 130 grain Sierra PSP bullets and load them to 2,900 FPS, and sometimes I use Hornady's 130 grain spire points with the same load of IMR-4350. I have a .308 Browning A-Bolt that I am using Hornady 150 grain Spire points with 44.0 Grains of IMR-4064, and velocity is around 2,700 FPS. Other bullet makes I've had great luck with are: Speer, Remington, and Winchester Power Points. But I sure miss those old style Winchester Silvertips.:(

There was a quy on Ebay that was selling a bunch of 130 grain 270 silvertips, looked like the old ones. I would have jumped on them if they were 7mm.

I have a number of 150 grain & 170 grain (.30-30) Silvertips. Guess I could adapt a load, for the 150's, for use in the .308.

I have been shooting the Balistic silvertips in a .300 wsm for last few years and on close shots (less than 100 yds) no pass throughs. Good blood trails on the ones that did run. They will do a lot of meat damage on deer though.
