If you are like me and constantly cleaning a rifle, or swapping scopes, or doing little minor gunsmithing chores, you need something better than your lap to hold the gun. I've got Pap's old copies of The American Rifleman kicking around and years ago I found an article from 1967 that described this gun vise. It takes about 20 minutes and you probably have the scrap wood out in the lumber pile right now. A picture will describe better than I can:

It takes about 40 inches of 2x6 and some scrap carpet. A C clamp with a padded block of plywood glued to it is used to protect the butt and the barrel or forearm rides in a V slot cut in the front block. I added a 1x6 tray on the base to hold screws and tools and stuff that could otherwise roll away, get spilled, knocked over, etc.

The back block that the butt is clamped to can be swapped from the right side to the left side if you need access to that part of the gun. Everything is held together from the bottom with 3" drywall screws and can be moved around just by zipping the screws out and putting them somewhere else. When I need real sturdiness, I just anchor the whole vise to the work bench by anchoring with more 3" screws. It won't budge, but can be unattached in seconds.

How long in the base? How tall are the 2 vertical pieces. How far from the base is the top of the A shaped block under the stock and the bottom of the v under the barrel.

I guess some dimensions woulda helped. Sorry.

The base is 29 inches long.

The front piece is 9" tall, the V slot is 2 inches deep.

The back block is 7 inches tall.

The stock support piece is 4 inches tall and the center of it is 5 1/2" from the back edge.

Everything is 2x6 with a coat of poly and scrap carpet glued to the edges to protect the gun. Everything is held together with 3" drywall screws. The back block can be moved from side to side, forward or backward if you need to fit a particular gun.

I had trouble with the carpet edges unraveling so I fired up the propane torch and melted everything into place.

He was big on the .350 Remington Mag... so I'm guessing a Remington model 600.

I've got one that doubles as a gun vise and shooting stand. It has elevation adjustable feet in the front of it.

You can 2 shot a scope in at 100 yards very easily.
