Auk and I have a huge problem with crawdads digging and tunneling through our yard. Is there anything that we can do? We managed to flush out one the other night. He is now in a jar...I guess you could say that we have a new pet that doesn't shed, bark, or meow....He sure does stink though. :)

Just flood your yard, plant rice, throw crawfish traps out with chicken parts, then invite us over and I'll show you what the Cajun's do with em'.

Seriously I can eat 5+ pounds of those critters when I visit Louisiana.
The time I seined some in Ky and ate them they seemed to have a dirt taste to them, guess I should have flushed them out in fresh water for a day or two.

I've been told you can kill them if you drop carbine in the holes. Not sure if "carbine" is the way its spelled but it's the stuff that's used in the old carbine lights.

when we were kids we use to put a few carbide rocks in a jar or 16 ounce glass coke bottles, put a little water and then put the lid on them and throw them at each other. till I had one blow up in my hand and had to get the glass picked out. :D

Legs,
I used to fish them out with a piece of bacon and some string. The burrowers were bigger than the stream crawdads, as i recall.

Bacon and string? I never thought of that...we will give it a try. The one that we managed to get is about 3 or 4 inches long.

leggy you can put a little copper sulfate down the holes and it will kill them. but it is like good habitat, more will eventually move in. tr

The hole where we captured the first crawdad from already has a new tenant taking up residence! The one that I saw this morning is bigger than the other one! Auk said something about mixing Seven dust with water and pouring that into the holes.

I have heard that they will leave if you spread lime on your yard. Not sure how much you will need but people I know say it works.

As for the moles in Schuylers yard. First you have to rid your yard of the grub worms and then the moles will leave. That's what they are feeding on.

WHY don't you guys just catch all you can and sell them to the local bait shop ? Sounds to me like you have a bonified Crawdad Farm ? OR sell them to a Seafood Restaurant for his menu ?

Auk and I are going fishing again today so we may use a crawdad for bait... Auk spent a good majority of Saturday night attempting to lure out the grandaddy of all crawdads with a fishing pole that was baited with a piece of country ham attached to the hook...he almost had him, but then he scurried back down into his hole.

Try that method again except this time have Auk seal off the entrace with a 12 ga when they stick there claws out.... This is assuming you live in the country of course.:D
We used to do that with moles with outstanding results. It does take patience though.

Tie a piece of string to a window screen. When "Ole Grandad" comes out just pull the screen over the hole. That works even in the city.

I think I cut a striking figure out in our front yard with a fishing pole, line going down into a little hole in the ground. :D I don't think the neighbors will be coming over to visit any time soon.

I'll bet a mouse trap baited with meat would work.

I thought of that yesterday while picking up some fishing supplies, but I didn't know if Auk could keep his toes out of it. He's always wondering over to the crawdad holes to see if they are near the top.

Auk is currently mixing Seven Dust with water and attempting to flush them out...he found an article about that on Google. He also dropped several smoke bombs down their holes earlier today. :) I think that we will just have to live with them.

Did you try the mouse trap? Those things would have to be easy to catch in any type of homemade trap

You givin up that easy you better hope no bears move into the yard.:D

That's why nightcrawlers and bacon works better. You have to let them gnaw on it for a bit and then you can usually pull them out.

Ok, ok...we will try the mousetraps. Wouldn't rat traps work better due to their size?

I might be giving up, but Auk isn't. He will continue attempting to lure them out with bacon, country ham, worms, etc. :)

It has indeed become a quest. Leggy suggested high explosives at one point, and I am thinking she may be on to something. If rat traps and chemical warfare do not work I am going to have to get medieval on their nasty crawdad butts.

I suggest a couple of game cameras in the front yard so we can be sure what we're dealing with.

Or maybe somebody's got one of those flexible fiber optic cameras that you can poke down in the lair. This could get interesting. (Or more likely, it's the off season and we are all just hungry for some form of entertainment.):D

Get yourself a sharp on one end metal rod, go out after dark with a flashlight. The crawdads seem to move to the top of the hole after dark. When you spot one don't hold the light on it long and spook it. Then take the metal rod and shove it at a angle down below the crawdad thru the hole blocking his retreat. Then if your not afraid of getting a little pinch reach down and grab the sucker. Used this trick to get them for fishing bait years ago.

The meter guy thought we were crazy! I was sitting on the back porch when he came by. He stopped at the first mouse trap and looked up at me. I tried to explain the situation to him, but he just shook his head and then voiced how that "just isn't right".

No problem but the 1000 dollar night vision scope to mount to it will require some saving up for. I'm thinking napalm might be a good option too. I really need some Claymore mines, believe they'd solve the problem too. Believe I am gonna have to declare all-out war, no holds barred. Wonder how much a tactical nuke costs...
