I did'nt bag a bird nor did i hear a Tom gobble, but fell in Love with the whole thing,My wife said because you were in the woods, I could live outdoors. My qustion is i started praticing with diaphram calls, i bought one at wally world along with a cd, i want to get a good diaphragm so can someone steer in the right direction, I have alot of time to get ready for the spring season, i just need a good mouth call. How could someone not like this sport? Ive also bought a couple of CD's with turkey sounds and then you try and copy them. Thanks for your time, And if there is someone in the Albany,Ky area that sells them let me know iam going too be down on the farm this weekend?

Daworz,
Welcome to the addiction! I started 5 years ago and read every book I could get my hands on about the wild turkey. I have a nice collection of 18 books ranging from calling to Biology 101.
The best calls that I have ever used are made by Boyd Smith in Western KY. His company is called "Cumberland River Calls" they are easy to use and last a long time with very little maintenance. I think he still has a website and is listed on here as Turkeyman.

I 2nd the Quaker Boy calls bspring. Old Boss Hen has gotten a many ol long beards in trouble.:) QB calls also seem to hold up real nice if you take care of them properly.

Primos Hook Series. Really good for beginners. Call automatically positions itself inside your mouth. I haven't tried them, but assume that the Primos Sonic Dome Series may do the same thing. One more thing. If your really having a hard time getting good sound from your calls, try a call with a smaller frame.

Primos Sonic Domes are smaller and are good for beginners. I prefer Primos turkey calls.

I've used several......one of my favorites were made by Heart of Dixie Game Calls. They got real hard to find....so...I tried many brands out and been using Primos for the last few years. I like the "piggy back" series....the reeds wont stick together.

There are lots of great calls on the market, I have used everything out there. The main call I use now is Primos true double and deadly double basically the same call. The stacked frame series by Primos seem to work better for me, they don't seem to require as much air to get them to work. That helps when your soft calling to close the deal on a stubborn longbeard.

I also like the Pittman calls. Harder to find but still is a good one. I like the black diamond (I think is what its called). Find one that feels good to ya. Good luck.

I would suggest just buying a few at $2-$3 apiece and see which one YOU feel the best with. Just my opinion, it ain't the call, it is the caller. Your time would be better spent learning when to call and when not to. Again , just another opinion.

First, let me say that I agree with the comments from GSP. While, you will find calls that feel and sound better to you, I would spend more time on knowing how and when to use the call versus the actual call. I spent more than a year learning how to effectively us a mouth call. Even after killing numerous birds learning when to use one is still in progress, lol. I then started experiencing with different brands until I found some that I liked. I started out many years ago with Quaker Boy, Ole Boss Hen and even today it has a nice sound and has called in many a long beard. I have since went thru Primos calls, HS Strut, and Knight & Hale. However, my personal favorite for the last several years is the Cane Creek line made here in KY. The have some of the best sounding mouth calls IMO on the market. Within that brand my favorites are "Mr. Death" and "Cane Creek Cutter".
I took what appears to be KY's largest non-typical gobbler this year under the muzzleloader category, and second largest eastern in the US (same category of non-typical muzzleloader) with a Cane Creek "Mr. Death" mouth call. I am in the process of filling out the paper work and sending to NWTF.
I hope this helps.
