View Full Version : Game Wardens/any others that know the answer?
I wrote the state with this question, but never got a reply.
I've been considering taking up coyote hunting as a means of keeping me "sharp". My question is whether or not there's a restriction on the number of rounds you can have in your firearm...sorta like the restriction bullets/shells you can have hunting game.
Thanks.

Did you email "KENTUCKY FISH & WILDLIFE" and ask them? I have ask them many questions and they've always been very prompt to answer. I hunt coyotes myself very hard and I only load 3-5 rounds because usually you only get one shot not over two at one. I would say beings there isn't any restrictions on what caliber to use,it doesn't matter how many shells your firearm holds unless during the period of firearm deer season.

Yes, Countryboy. I wrote KDFW from the email link on their website, but didn't get a reply. Maybe it just got lost in the shuffle or something.
I didn't think it mattered how many rounds it held (since it's varmint, not game), but just wanted to make sure first. I also heard you can't use full metal jacket for hunting game, but do you know if it's ok for varmints?
Thanks

Really I don't think there's any restrictions except spotlights, night vision, and regular restrictions during firearm deer season. My opinon though you don't need full metal jackets for yotes or alot of shells. Any rifles that will shoot accurate up to 150-200 yards will do. They don't have a heavy bone frame so bullet penetration is not a problem. You mainly want to concentrate on bullet accuracy. There's three of us when we go and usually the rifles we take are 22-250,.223,30-06, or 7mm. The 7mm is a overkill but I love the distance it gets for very large fields. I would have to say 22-250s are the best choice but that's just one man's opinion.

Thanks, CountryBoy. I'm not so much worried about the pentration (FMJ) as I am as being too cheap to buy any non-full metal jacketed ammo. I've got all this .223 FMJ and just wanted to just it other than for practice. But didn't want to do anything illegal. Didn't think Coyotes would count on this, but just wanted to make sure.
I'm surprised that KDFWR hasn't written me back. Maybe I should try again.

Hello EC, while I understand (and appreciate) you wanting to use "cheaper" ammo on the 'yotes, I think you should understand the danger of doing do. They are MUCH more apt to ricochet, then a regular bullet, and MUCH MUCH more apt to than a "varmit" bullet? Why wouldn't a "varmit" bullet be as apt to ricochet? They are designed to "fragment"(break apart) upon impact with anything of any substance whatsoever. So if/when they hit the ground,a rock etc. they are into pieces, not an X grain bullet still flying intact. If you are in an area where this is not a problem(harder to find these days) the good news is a .22 hole going in and coming out(in case you're selling the hides)...Hope this info helps a little. :)

Good point, Aceoky. Glad you brought that up. I should be ok where I'm planning on hunting, but any other locations I need to consider an alternative "round". Thanks

Hey EC, anytime, many people don't think about things like that, they just want to shoot(who doesn't) but we have to try to keep our sport safe as possible. I think you'll enjoy the new sport of shooting those yodel dogs! Good luck, stay safe!

10 rounds in mag. I wouldn't use the FMJ stuff. While cheap it isn't made for varmint work. Winchester and others sell 50 rd "Varmint packs" in .223 Rem.

Hey EC, why not look into one of the new .17 caliber rimfires. Ammunition is relative inexpensive, range is in the 150 to 200 yards area and it seems to be one of those rounds that is going to be real popular for years to come.
