From the FL Sun-Sentinel:

" Woman Shoots Gator That Attacks Her Dog

BRADENTON, Fla. -- A woman has shot an alligator that came into her home
and attacked her dog.

The alligator was only 3 feet long, but Candy Frey wasn't taking any
chances. When the reptile came into the lanai of her home east of
Bradenton Saturday and attacked her golden retriever, Frey went and got
her gun.

After Frey and her daughter managed to push the gator out of the lanai
through the dog door, she blasted away at it four times.

"I was running on so much adrenaline," the 48-year-old former U.S. Marine
aviation technician told the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. "I just freaked out
and shot him -- boom, boom, boom, boom."

A neighbor called deputies and the state sent a wildlife officer to
investigate.

The alligator barely bled from gunshots to the neck and shoulder, Frey
said, and wildlife officer put it back in the lake.

The deputy gave Frey a warning citation for hunting without a license.

Alligators have been blamed for three fatal attacks in the span of a week
in other parts of Florida. "

Sounds more like self defense during a home invasion to me.
I don't think that is classified as hunting.

I agree. That is definatly not hunting and if i or something i own is being attacked i am going to defend it.

I recieved an email today about a possible solution to this and a couple of other problems:
1. Dig a mote along the border with Mexico;
2. Use the dirt to rebuild the levees in New Orleans;
3. Put the Florida alligators in the mote.
:D:D:D

I watched a TV show a few days ago about the booming Gator population and the number of increased attacks.They estimate there are 4 million gators in Florida alone,this coupled with the booming human population is leading to a growing new trend.Maybe the alligators have adapted to an easier prey?
On Sanibel Island (a former Gator friendly place) there have been 5 deaths since 2001 and several more attacks,they now allow Gator Hunting in residential areas,but not in the sanctuary's

I lived in Louisiana for several years in the late 70's - early 80's and had friends who hunted gators for a living,one of their favorite tricks was to take a small yapping dog in the boat at night,they are a favorite Alligator snack.
My oldest son graduated from UL-Lafayette a few years ago and I went to the graduation,while visiting I took a drive through my old fishing grounds along the SW La coast,near Pecan Island people have homes right along the canals and marsh,their little children were riding big wheels around with 10-14 foot Gators within easy rushing distance,I couldn't believe my eyes.
