Well This Wasn't My Biggest Bird Ever Taken But It Will Probably Stick Out In My Mind As One Of The Best Hunting Adventures. Even Hunters Have A Soft Side I Guess. Its Not Just About The Size Of The Animal Or The Kill, But It Also Has A Lot To Do With The Adventure And Memories Shared Between Father And Son Or Daughter Or Best Friends.
The Last Wednesday Of Turkey Season My Best Friend And I Decided To Hunt Together. We Had Both Already Taken Mature Toms This Season But Never Turkey Hunted Alot Together. We Went To My Old Honey Hole That Morning. We Were In A Small Field With To Larger Fields Just Below Us When We Heard To Toms Gobbling Onj The Roost. I Don't Know Who Was More Excited The Toms Or Us. We Set Up And Gave A Few Soft Calls. The Turkeys Were About 75 To 80 Yards From Us And About 50 Yards Apart. As We Set Talking About What To Do The Thoughts Of Us Getting A Double Was Always In My Mind. The 2 Birds Came Off The Roost And Werent Very Vocal. After Hearing Just A Few Gobbles Over The Next Hour Or So. We Could Tell That The Birds Had Went Seperate Directions And Had Circled Around Us.
We Decided To Get Up And Walk Back Towards My Uncles L Shaped Field Were It Sounded Like One Had Headed. We Got To The Edge And Saw 3 Hens Feeding. We Watched Them For About 20 Minutes As They Fed Up The Field And Around The Bend Out Of Sight.
The Thoughts Of Us Getting Anything Was Now Starting To Fade As We Joked In The Edge Of The Field About Some Calling Techniques. We Walked To The End Of The Field And Up A Log Road To The Edge Of The ridge along A Barb Wire Fence . Now, We Really Weren't Being Quiet And I Was About 10 Feet Ahead Of My Buddy. I Stood On A Stump And Looked Up Along The Fence To The Edge Of A Cow Pasture. I Saw A Bird, I Stopped My Buddy And Pointed In The Direction. I Could See Its Redish White Head But Could Not See The Beard. As I Watched I Then Saw Another I Motioned That There Was 2 And He Pulled Down His Face Mask. I Said Ill Take The Lead Bird And He Can Shoot The Back One. Now All This Time They Are Walking On Our Side Of The Fence Right At Me And He Is Down The Bank And Cant See Them Yet. He Starts Russling His Feet In The Leaves And I Am Like What Are You Doing, They'll Think Its Hens Feeding. Im Mouth Calling And So Is He And They Are Coming At Me On A String. I Tell My Buddy To Let Me Know When He Has The Shot And He Will Have To Shoot First Because If I Shoot First I Will Take Them Both Out. They Are Closing The Gap Fast And Im Whispering Now, Now, Now, And Each Time He's Saying Not Yet. Finally They Are With In 25 Yards Of Me And He Says Now!!!!!!! Boom, Boom As We Each Shoot Almost At The Same Time. Both Birds Hit The Ground Floping. I Turn To LOOK At My Buddy And If You Could Look Up The Word Excitement At That Moment It Would Have Had Our Picture Beside Of It. We Were Giving Each Other High Fives And Laughing Like A Couple Of School Kids. We Got The Birds And SAt At The Edge Of The Field Laughing And Talking About The Hole Experince Like The Other Wasn't Even There And EACH WAS GIVING THE OTHER A DETAILED Description Of What Just Happened.
The Birds Both Weighed 13 Lbs
Had 3 3/4 Inch Beards.
This Hunt Will Go Down As One Of My Favorites. It Wasn't Because I Took The Biggest Bird Ever Because I Didn't, But Because The Look On My Best Friends Face When We Shot And The Birds Hit The Ground Was Priceless. Dont Forget That Hunting Is More Than Just Killing Something. It Can Bring A Family Closer Or MAKE 2 Friends Feel More Like Brothers.
Sorry I Didn't Bring Any Tissues. Lol
