I have been trying for 2 years to get my first bird and I finally cashed in this morning on the last day. I have passed on several jakes over the past 2 years (much to the chagrin of my hunting buddies) since I told them I wanted my first one to be a mature bird. Probably went out 10-15 times this season and heard dozens of birds saw just as many and passed on some jakes. But could never get a mature bird to come in close. This morning I went out to the farm and set up a couple hen decoys and got comfortable. About 15 minutes later I heard 4 gobblers behind me a couple hundred yards away nd then all of a sudden I heard one from across the field that I was sitting in about 100 yards away. I saw it fly down but it didn't respond to any of my calls. I heard it moving around and gobbling in a half mile area for about 3.5 hours and I decided to stay put becuase I have been busted by turkeys 3 times by getting up too soon. I then heard it come back into the field I was set up in but it didn't react to the decoys or come to my calls. It started moving away so I decided to stand up and see if could see him. As I stood up all I could see was his fan a couple hundred yards away (going away from me.) So I decided to try and get closer so I dropped my vest, grabbed my gun and started belly crawling through the corn field for about a hundred yards looking up occasionally to see where he was. Well I looked up and he was coming straight at me in full stur. So I just laid there still peeking occasionally. He got to about 20 yards and I pekked up and I think he saw me or something and started to walk off. He got to about 50 yards and stopped and then I put some 3 in number 5 heavy shot into him and dropped him right there. Ended up being 20 pounds with a 10.5 inch bird and 1 1/4 inch spurs. I am hooked now. I will post a pic or two.

A big congratulations on your first killed, that is a very nice bird. Isn't Turkey hunting grand. This will be a good memory that will stay with you along time.
