Saw 4 jakes this morning, whoop up a gobbler and take his hens away. Big suckers too. It was a good show. The tails were mature like they were mature birds but their beards were about 2-4 inches.

If they had completely round tails, the center feathers not longer than the sides, then they were adult birds. Juveniles haven't molted all the tail feathers. Beards do break off.

Sounds like you saw a real show...

yup, full round fan equals at least a two year old bird. longest spurs I have ever seen came off a big bird with about a 1.5 inch stump of a beard.

Gotta say I have killed 2 jakes with tails that were so close to full that you could not tell it unless you were holding the bird in you hands.

My neihbor was telling me last night about 4 jakes running the old boss tom off on his farm Tues. HE said he watched them chase him for about 2 hrs . Every time the old fool would get away fom them he would start strutting and gobbling again and they would track him down. I just hope they ran him my way:D

How many gobblers do you think are killed every year by jakes in groups?

Don't have to have much of a beard at all to be a gobbler as long as they have a full fan. They probably had some spurs to make up for the beard...

but they were together and all had short stubby beards, im sure they were jakes, just by the way they looked and acted.

Could be mature birds with beard rot. Or burned off, I have heard of gobblers beard dragging a newly burned area and they burn off.

Sounds like a mature bird to me!

they wouldnt gobble or go into full strutt, only half bulgded up look.

Jakes absolutely will gobble, and go into full strut, and breed a hen. There will be many jake's gobble that cannot be distinguished from an adult bird.
