While i was out scouting this morning i heard a gobbler screaming his head off. i sat and listend to him for a long while then got up and walked to one of my favorite feilds to watch a nd listen for birds there all the time i could still hear that other gobbler , i thought man that ole boy is on fire and to bad it isnt season yet, then i had a group of jakes come in to where i was sitting 6 of them came to withen 15 yards of me, thats when i heard the gobbler that i was listening to gobble and then i heard the SHOT.. SOME SON OF A B#@%H POACHED that bird !!! i got up and scared the jakes to death and made a run to where i had heard the poaching but by the time i got there all that was left was a pile of feathers !!!
i tried to find tracks of the poacher to follow but no luck., i had to come on here to vent this out( im just sick over this and madder than hell !!!!!!!)

At least you put forth the effort to look for them. Some people just complain but never want to do anything. Thanks for trying. Someone will eventually mess up.

Welcome to my reality.

That's the reason I have been in on a 460 acre deer/turkey lease for nearly 10 years but haven't turkey hunted on it in 5 now. The locals kill, educate or run off all the gobblers weeks in advance of season ever opening.

Too many empty hulls and too many feathers found in thier roost areas on opening morning without so much as a sound of a gobble.

Hard for a CO to do anything either unless he camps out there 24/7.

Good luck with finding out who did it.

I am continually baffled by what illegal lengths and means people will go to just to kill a turkey. I mean it truly makes no sense.

I feel your pain brother!!! Every one who hunts deals with this same problem whether they are aware of it or not. You can bet the same person who kills turkeys out of season will kill deer, ducks, and what ever else out of season. It's also a safe bet he's a trespasser, road hunter and spot lighter. Like I've said before, there will be day when they will get what's comming to them. It's good you tried to catch them but these guys are the most sneaky and crafty guys in the woods. It's a shoot and run game for them. It's usually their mouth that gets them caught, not their woodsmanship.

I would put a little effort in trying to figure out which SOB did that and or call the game warden. That SH** needs to be stopped!!

Thats unfortunate, but it happens. We caught a guy 2 years ago about 1 week before season on our place......

He found himself in trouble.

I heard a shot Sunday morning in Hopkins Co just off hwy 630 about two miles from the Webster Co line. I was down Antioch(sp) road. Shot was about 6:15 and sounded to the east of me about 1/2 mile!

Sorry to hear about this. I dont think i would have chased after him too far though. No telling how some of those idiots act. My dad was hunting 2 years ago in a quail call-back pen and a hen came out of the woods 75 yards beside him. He watched her for a moment and then BBBOOOOOOOMMMM, a poacher shot her. The poacher ran out and grabbed the hen. Dad jumped up out of the call back pen and took off after the poacher. The poacher dropped the hen when he saw my dad and ran for the woods. My dad got to the edge of the woods and he heard the guy pump his gun. Dad stopped after that, the guy could have easily shot my dad if he had went any farther. One of our guys that was sitting in a deer stand beside the field saw the poacher run through another field. He said it must have been a young guy because he was flat "scootin'" through that field. That was the first time in years we had problems with poachers, and the last to this date. If he did it once, he wont think twice about doing it again to any and all game. In or out of season, at night, with a spotlight; whatever. These SOBs need to be stopped, but dont put your life at risk to do so.

Was this bird poached on private or public land? If you found feathers, you look for the closest place for a good set up spot. You may find an empty shell hull. Where is the closest road, gate entrance, pull off, etc you may find at least where he came from.
This may help you if you hear a shot again. You can then head straight for where he parked. Drive the road and watch for parked trucks or cars.

Hope that you catch whoever did this.

when i posted this i was so mad i forgot to mention it was on my farm..
i spent the day going around to the neighbors (just visiting ) to look for clues, and do a little chating to see if i could find out anything. and nothing turned out.. i have a pipeline that runs through my farm and it runs over to a bad area where alot of my problems come from, i have my place posted and take daily walks on it to just look for trespassers.
this past deer season i found 3 deer shot and left, my tree stand was stolen and the worst part someone shot my english bulldog that wouldnt chase a deer or anything else for that matter..
i had this same problem a few years ago and thought i had solved the problem but now its back.. i have contacted the g.w.s in the past with no good luck..its hard to prove anything without proof.. so i always carry my camera and a gun on my walks but it is hard to be in 2 places at 1 time..
in the morning i am going out and if i hear a gobbler i am going to set up close and wait..( i am going to catch this guy myself and put an end to it)!! open season on poachers !!!!!! dont worry i wont shoot the guy but i will march his ass out to the police !!!

my guess would be that it is someone who is walking in on you.i wouldnt think they would be stupid enough to park on the side of a rd for fear of you or someone else seeing their vehicle.the a--hole probably knows whos land he is hunting (poaching)on and knows his way around.and like you i would start with the neighbors.could be one of your neighbors friends who is parking at their house thinking no one will notice their vehicle.hope you catch the s.o.b just be careful if you do catch them and approach them you never know what a sicko like that will try and do.good luck and be careful.

Jeff:
It might be worth your time and money to purchase a good trail cam, set it up in a concealed spot w/o a flash and see if you can get some picutres of the trespassers. If nothing else, if you can I.D. them you could charge them with Criminal Tresspass III - they won't get anyting other than a fine but, it might send a message and give you some degree of satisfaction. Just a thought.

That makes me sick too. People like that are giving a bad name to us. Personally I would like to see some stiffer penalities for tresspassers and pochers. I have problems with atv's and the a**holes growing pot. Ive talked to law enforcement but yeah thats about as far as they went with it. I even talked to the CO but he said he couldnt be everywhere. But the trail cam idea works good, just hide it real well. Keep your ears open too. People brag about it, and someone that heard about it might not know who you are and let it slip.

And I doubt your neighbors would shoot your dog even if he was chasin...Your dog can chase all he wants to on your place...but you already knew that.

People like that really burn me up!! They ought to make the penalties for poaching and tresspassing so severe that people are scared to death to poach. In my opinion game wardens are spread too thin. I think they just have one per county and that's not near enough. My buddy and I had a similar experience.....we were bowhunting deer and we heard a gunshot pretty close. We went to check it out, and saw two people hovered over a dead doe. We started chasing them and could have caugth them easily, but the voice of reason stepped in. They had a high powered rifle and we only had bows. We called the game warden and he didn't even check it out, he just told us to take the deer. I've thought of bringing a pistol with me bowhunting in case soemthing like this happens again, but even then a man with a pistol is no match for one with a hight powered rifle. Do you all carry pistols bowhuntin.....is it legal?

If you do catch this SOB, follow up on it and show up at his court date to make sure they don't let that little bas*** off the hook.

"A lock won't stop a thief, but it will keep an honest man honest"
Not sure who said that first but it is as true today as ever. Neither will a No Trespassing sign stop a trespasser but an honest man will not cross that line. However, a picture of the perpetrator will go a long way toward finding him, identifying him, and making sure he gets what he deserves. There are cams out there that will stamp a photo with time, date, and GPS location. Things that would be tough for a stupid redneck poacher to argue with in court. They can be outfitted with Infrared so they will take great pics at night with flash that is invisible to humans. The sky or your wallet is the limit!:D I would visit this site and look around.

papabob is the resident expert it seems. He has built cams for researchers in Malaysia studying Tigers so I guess he has it goin on. PM him and tell him what you want to do and if you need any help putting it together let me know. You can build your own for much less than the cams you see in Cabelas. Rick

You might ask the trespasser what kind he likes? He'll probably end up with it.

This month's Peterson's Hunting magazine has got a real good article on what to look for in a trail cam, lists some suggested brands. Their web sight - http://www.huntingmag.com/ Don't think you can find that article there however.
