well since the beginning of the season(the weekend before) i had had increasingly better luck. the 25th i actually called a really nice bird in but he came in too far to my right so he spooked when i tried to reposition myself while he was behind a group of trees. i came back the next day and figured i wouldn't have much luck since a cold front had moved in the night before. i finally got a bird to gobble so i made a circle around to where i thought he would be and set up on the edge of a small field. i set up my love triangle flock where it could be seen from all directions and started to call. the bird that i set up on was off to my right and he continued to gobble and sounded like he was getting closer. i ithen noticed back behind my decoys a bird. i could tell it was a gobbler but a jake. as he moved in closer i considered letting him go since a more mature bird was over in the woods next to me, i then realised how dumb of and idea that was. this was the first time i had an opportunity to get a bird and how was i to know if i would ever have another opportunity. i judged the shot to be a little past 30 yards so i shot. he went down flapping and i ran to him. he picked his head up and i shot again just in case because i've had a bird run off before. after celebration i paced off the shot to 41 paces, but of course that's my huge 6'4" frame pace so he was probably somewhere between 45 and 50 yards which was definately further than i would've liked to shoot but my little 3in mag did it's job.
i was shooting a Rem 870 express turkey camo with federal mag shok 3" in #6's with the flight controled wad.
