Anybody ever buy douche????
My dog got hit by a skunk a few nights ago, and he he still stinks after two tomato juice washes and one shampoo and dip. I read on the "net that Massingill douche will work good???? I'm just wondering what size it takes for a 105 dog???? :D I'm sure some of you have experience with this sort of thing and can help me out.

Don't know about the dousche but they make a product specifically to clean the skunk smell. Don't know the name of it.
Funny you ask. My dog was sprayed 2 weeks ago. The old lady read the same thing you did on the internet but I think she went with the tomato juice instead. I can still smell skunk butt in the backyard very faintly. I thought that stuff wore off quicker???

The best recipe I found to remove skunk smell is one bottle hydrogen peroxide, one table spoon dish detergent. Apply to animal, hold for five minutes and rinse off. I had to do this on a Rott and a shephard. You will need to adjust for dog size and coat but one batch worked on each of mine. This left just the faintest of smells but the tomato juice thing didn't even touch it. I found the shephard eating a skunk, now how nasty is that. Good luck.

105lbs...thats a lot of summers eve. How about a barrel of distilled water and a 50gal drum of acetic acid..go commercial!

Mix a couple bottles of hydrogen peroxide with 1/4 cup baking soda and a squirt of baby shampoo or liquid hand soap. Use it immediately as it loses effectiveness after a while. Soak them up with it, let it stand for a few minutes, then rinse off. Keep it off the eyes, but cover the rest of the dog.
I've never tried it, but I would try using some kind of spray bottle to make sure the whole dog got treated. This is the recipe others swear by, but I'm content to take their word for it and not have to prove them right.:D
I've never treated a skunky dog without coming out of the deal smelling as bad or worse as the dog. I can't see how moving the smell from the dog to myself is any improvement.
Larry Mueller says that suspending the dog by the legs and hanging it upside down over a smoky wet-leaves fire will neutralize the odor. The science seems like it work, as the skunky smell would be neutralized by the tannic acid in the smoke from the leaves. Getting the dog to agree to hanging upside down in smoke would seem to be the hard part. And there you are again, rassling around with a skunky dog, getting it all over you as well.

That's the recipe, I forgot the baking soda. It definitely works.

Another... Bottle of peroxide, cup of dish washing soap (grease cutting type) and a cup of laundry detergent.
Seems the skunk spray is oil base. The dish soap will cut it loose, the peroxide will neturalize it and the laundry soap makes it thick and stay on the dog as you wash him.

The hydrogen peroxide (H202) gives up it's extra oxygen molecule when mixed with baking soda. The oxygen oxidizes the thiolol in skunk spray and that gets rid of the smell. I believe the dish soap is for adhesion and good smell.
Stuff works great on Jack Russels.

holy cow....I learned something today...
Skunky dogs can be treated 2 ways
1. douche (my wife would surely get a picture of this  )
2. hanging upside down over a fire...er, cook the dog.
seems harsh :D

The mythbuster guys tried tomato juice, commercial skunk spray and peroxide, baking soda and soap mixture and the latter worked as well as anything.

I think you need to have a bloody mary somewhere in there as well.

Well, if you use a douche and it works, you better add directions to clarify on the dog, not internally
You know some dumbass will try to plug one end or the other:p
Rak, that would probably be after the Bloody Marys that Ateup mentioned!:D

Way I heard it was equal parts of hydrogen peroxide and white vinegar ,mixed with several spoonsfull of baking soda, and cut with dawn dishwashing detergent.
It works,my sister saw this on either mythbusters or discovery channel and that night her dog that stays in the house at night went out and right into Pepe Le Phew,It ran back in and with everybody yelling it jumped on the couch and a bed before being captured.

Did the peroxide thing today. Couldn't get the nerve to ask for a 5 gallon bucket full of Massengill's. Seems to be a lot better. He was still wet when I left the house and will know tomorrow. If you try it, make sure you watch and keep it out of the dogs eyes. With most of the stink up around the head area, it was a concern but we did OK.

I could be wrong about the vinegar, couldn't get hold of her to ask.
Had an uncle that tried an Alka-Seltzer when they first came out, problem was he chewed and swallowed the tablets,he was working in the mines and they other guy in his section said foam was running out of his mouth and nose till he though he had Hydraphopia.
Talk about a volcano.
Some boys I worked with used to put drain cleaner and balls of aluminum foil in liter pop bottles. They blow up pretty good.

Probably a good thing you didn't go with the massingil's -- doubt your dog would have ever thought of you in the same way again.
