Anybody remember why April 3 is a date to remember in Kentucky? Last night should have been a reminder...you younguns might not have been around, but I bet a lot of us remember that day vividly.

I do. I was 7. My dad's office was on bardstown road and the tornado hit as he got in his car-which was totalled. He walked overland to St Matthews and eventually hitched a ride home. He had little cuts all over him and glass in his shirt pocket.

It was 1974, April 3, a Wednesday afternoon. I was a rugrat playing outside, and that was the blackest sky to the North of us that I have seen to this day.

I was in my hometown, Xenia, Ohio, which then had a population of around 29,000 people. The storm killed 38, injured hundreds, and destroyed several hundred homes. It got all but one school--the high school was completely flattened, and got just about every government building and church. When it went through the center of town, the tornado was an F-5 and nearly one mile across at the base.

It hit a subdivision built on slabs, and there were entire streets that did not need much more than a broom to clean up, as the storm took all the belongings and debris with it. That was an unbelievable sight.

i was in the back yard playing baseball...we could see the tornados on the south side of the interstate as they passed thru the evergreen rd and jones lane area south of franfort. we picked up hail the size of a youth baseball from our yard....my mom, who was in the kitchen baking cookies, never said a word...we hid in the garage out back until the hail quit and went right back to our baseball game, using hail as the balls.....

I was in the Armor school at Ft.Knox. Spent the rest of that day on a Medovac Chopper searching for survivors from Brandenburg. I helped to pull a KY State Trooper out of his car after a 2x4 went thru his door and thru his abdomin. It was ugly and it flattened that town. I do not remember how many died there, but it was tooo many. Mother Nature kicked a$$ that day !

I do not remember how many died there, but it was tooo many.

iirc, it was 28 or 30. It hit the downtown area in Brandenburg too, and I think that was where most of Kentucky's fatalities occurred.

I was just a kid but I can still remember reading the C-J articles and seeing the damage in Louisville around Shawnee. They ran a photo taken of grieving family members at a Brandenburg funeral, and I can remember being shocked that somebody would publish a picture taken at such a private intense moment.

31 were killed at Brandenburg. That was the second-highest death toll that day, which is also the record for the greatest number of tornadoes in a single day--148. There were over 300 killed and over 5000 hospitalized, 1150 of which came from Xenia.

I was 11 and was playing in the garage with my cousin and the garage door was up. I remember it raining really hard and then it just stopped. My mom opened the door to the house and yelled at us to get in the basement. We waited it out there. It didn't get too close to us but I was in the Boy Scouts at the time and they called us out to help clean up some of the hard hit areas. I'll never forget some of those images I saw going into some of those areas.

Here is a website I found last year on that is about that day:

Heck I remember, we had just gotten off the school bus and the tornado's hit about 10 minutes later...Wiped nearly almost the entire Daisy Hill society off the Mountain.......Plus destroyed a few business's as well. We got lucky it missed our house and our neighbors all around us within a 5 mile stretch...But everyone else go damage of some sorts out of the SCARY A$$ sounding Train when it hit....:eek::eek:

Reports around the county in Pulaski are saying roof's torn off and a bunch of trees down In/around Somerset. I think northern Pulaski got it the worst but haven't actually gotten any reports from up there yet. Just going by what the radar was showing.

It was dark when it hit here but I don't think we got it as bad as north and south of here did.

I may have a tree down in the back for all I know but it will have to wait until morning to know for sure.

Still heavy lightning around here.

I was there but don't remember any of it since I was still in my mamma's belly at the time. Her and my grandma were trapped in the basement for hours after it all went down. Almost completely leveled the house they were in.

Last evening while the storm was coming through Louisville the Weather Channel was comparing this outbreak to the one in 1973. They showed a bunch of film from Xenia, where I was that day. I was struck by how vivid my memory is of that day and the days that followed.

Hope everyone made it through safely. By God's Grace we dodged the bullet here, by and large.

the storm last night blew the roof off of my back porch and set it down in my front yard. lucky though, the only damage was to the porch that we were getting ready to tear down anyway
