Just got a new 870 last week. Went hunting this weekend and the finish is coming off the forearm. On the left side it is over 1" wide and the full length of the forearm and also a little on the receiver. I mean it is bare, no markings at all, just tan. On the right side it is not as bad, but still coming off. It started on Friday and after ever hunt it continued to get worse. I haven't put any oil or solvent of any type at all. The only friction it could have come from, is when it was slung over my shoulder.
I'm taking it back to the sporting goods store tomorrow. Has anyone had this happen before? This is the 4th camo'd gun I've had and I have never had a problem.
Thanks.

My 870 Super Magnum was bought in 1998. It has some of the camo finish rubbing off on the left side of the receiver right on the bottom edge of it where it rubs against my turkey vest when I have it slung on my shoulder. But it is just some wearing - I wouldn't really say it was coming off. Sounds like something went wrong during the dipping of your gun to me?

Went back to the store. They acted like I must have done something. The only thing I can figure is Bug Spray. I have a 3-D camo pull over and I sprayed it with Deet before we went out. The gun was in the truck, so it couldn't of been sprayed directly on the gun. I called Remington. They confirmed that Deet will take the finish off. Nothing in owner's manual mentions that. I told the rep that its a Turkey gun and if you don't use bug spray in Alabama during turkey season you'll be covered with mosquitos, chiggers and ticks. They said to send it back and it would be a "Factory Decision". Very disappointed. I sprayed my clothes, put the gun on my back an hour later and the bug spray took off the finish, give me break. 4th camo gun I've owned, I've never ever had a problem. Be carefull with 100% Deet!

I wouldn,t think spray would take off the finish after it has dried on your cloths. However if you sprayed your cloths and overspray got on the gun finish it very well could affect the finish. I remember when squirrel hunting years ago "OFF" would soften the finish on gun stocks if you transfered from your hands.

The funny thing is, I sprayed my camo cover on Friday morning and didn't spray it again the rest of the weekend, and it got worse each time I hunted.

I think remington has just gone to to the crapper. They are cutting quality to make more money and thats just wrong. I used to love remingotn prodcucts but i will not buy anything from now on. I use deet and my camo on my 870 isnt coming off???

That bug spray will take the camo off your gun quicker than greased corn through a gobbler boys....
DO NOT GET THAT STUFF ON A CAMO'D GUN..... it works on it just like paint thinner.
The higher the concentration of deet, the worse it is. The high concentration deet stuff never really dries either, it stays sort of oily. That gun sock made it wick straight to your gun, just like a big old sponge.
Also don't get it on your finished wood stock or forearm, fishing poles (blank or foam grip), or anything plastic in your trucks. Bug spray is a highly effective solvent on paint and plastic compounds.
I've accidentally taken the finish off of several hunting and fishing items with the stuff over the years. It will ruin plastic trim in a car or truck when you lay a treated arm or leg against something.
Most all of the spray stuff like Off and Repel do it too.
I've got an old stereo out in my garage that had two bottles of 100% deet sitting on one of the speakers. It has eaten the finish completely off down to the wood under where both bottles were sitting, just from what little wicks out that you can't even see.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I wouldn't hold out too much hope of the manufacturer fixing it for nothing.

Here is alittle tidbit on Deet. While my unit was preparing for deployment to Kuwait in '03, they took our cammies and sprayed them with Deet. After they gave them back a few of us asked about the safety of Deet. They said "Oh its harmless, test don't show any risk to humans, it is fine to put on your skin. But don't put a watch on with a plastic band on. It will eat the plastic completely away." Now I am no genius but if it will eat plastic, no telling what it will do to skin, paint or anything for that matter. So becareful.

I scanned the back of some Repel with 10% Deet. I don't know if you can read it but I highlighted the part that is important.

Jarhead & Quackstackr, Thanks for the info. Live and Learn. I have had an 870 in the past that was stolen 2 years ago. I absolutely loved that gun. Thought I would upgrade to a Benelli auto, didn't love it. Traded and got a Browning auto Gold Hunter, did not love it either. All of these guns were camo. In the past, I have had to basically bathe in Repel or Off to keep from getting carried off. Once I was hunting in MO. We had to spray everything even our face masks, gloves and I probably even sprayed the gun too. (TICKs by the 1000s). I found ticks in my truck for over a week! None ever had hint of problems with the finish. Heck, I felt like I could paddle a boat if I had to, with the old 870. I traded the Browning for this 870. I wanted to get back what I really liked, Remington (just my preference). This is the 3 &1/2",with the thumbhole. Got 28 pellets in the head and neck at 60 yards with the factory choke and #6 hevishot. I love the performance of the gun, but I'm very disheartened with the finish. You guys can probably see my disappointment. I thought Rem. would have been a little more sympathetic. But it is all about the $. I will send it back at the end of the season and see what happens. If they don't re-dip it, I'll buy a pack of Sharpie's and let the kids color it. Never seen anything take that stuff off. Heading out in the morning and will be washing the deet out of my camo cover.

I was screwing up other toys with bug spray way before the camo guns came out. :(
Anybody that hasn't marred a finish on paint or plastic with the stuff yet is just extremely lucky.
Mossyhorns learned the hard way a couple of years ago on his then-new 1187 gobbler wobbler too.
If I have to use the stuff, I make sure I have some wet wipes with me now to wipe it off my hands before I ever handle anything.
I had it eat the foam handle off a fishing rod in my hands in under 5 minutes one night while smallmouth fishing. I just didn't even think about it until it felt weird in my hands.. and it was too late. :(
Once it starts, there's not much way to stop it until you get every bit of it off of whatever you've gotten it on... taking it down to whatever material it didn't soak into. It acts just like that finish remover you can buy for furniture.

Here is another solution, check out www.camoclad.com (http://www.camoclad.com) and take a look at thier shotgun kits. They are removable and they say it doesn't mar the gun. 25$ for the kit, shipping is a bit high though. Just a idea, I think I am going to do my Mossberg before season.

No need to pay that price jarhead, they've got the camoclad kits right here cheaper than that.

Thanks Quakr. I ordered the HS kit. It say specifically Deet resistant. Much better deal on shipping. I email camoclad twice about thier high shipping and but no response. At least this way I can support a kentucky biusness. thanks agian.

Jarhead i have a friand who's dad is real messed up from deet, he was a foreman at a statepark in oklahoma and now has seasures and cannot drive, he says it from sprying deet arond the park, but he cannot prove it. Thats probably not all he was exposed to but thats what he claims.
