Well, headed to the woods on opening morning of youth season with lots of high hopes. My 11 year old son, Mason and I get setup in our blind over looking a food plot near the top of an oak ridge which has a logging road running right down the middle of the ridge. As soon as we get settled in we hear about 5 different groups of birds hammering from the roost in several directions with some birds roosted close by. Long story short, we stayed in the blind until 2PM before finally heading for lunch. During that time in the blind we had almost constant action in the food plot and on the ridge in form of long beards, jakes and tons of hens. Lots of strutting, gobbling and fighting but we were nothing but April Fools on day one.
Day two began about the same except we had three long beards roosted right on top of us hammering at daylight. One was right in front of the blind, one to our left and one to our right. At 7AM, I heard the one to our left hit the ground and thunder in our direction. A couple soft yelps and clucks and I see a big fan coming down the edge of the food plot right towards the blind. After about 15 long minutes of strutting, gobbling and slowly easing our way he was finally within 20 yards. Needless to say, Mason was ready and pulled the trigger as the 870 barked out and the old number 5's made him the fool today. Mason's first long beard weight 21lbs. with 10.25 beard and inch spurs. He was soo excited to get his first long beard and I was so proud of him! Attached below are some of the pics from my camera phone, not the best quality but these say it all!!!!
