I just bought a new Mossberg 835 ultr-mag (with thumbhole grip...very sweet!), but noticed in reading through the manuals that it warns to only shoot lead shot through the gun. I picked up a box of Remingtion Hevi-shot to try out when I bought the gun, but now I'm a little leary of shooting these shells...Should I just buy a choke that's designated for lead or steel shot? Anyone have any experience with this?

Actually just pick you up a choke that is designated for Hevi-Shot. You did buy the brand that is for turkey..Number 4,5,or 6 shot...it will not be as chokes prolly around a .710 or up to a .720...My xx-full lead is around a .650.. I personally like lead better than the hevi-shot.

my 835 shoots winchester #5 3.5s h.vs with factory turkey choke GREAT..
i have never seen paying any extra cash for different choke or the more expensive shells, ive killed more turkey's than i can count with this gun..
goodluck...jeff.

If you shoot any shot other than lead out of the factory choke, the choke will eventualy take on an egg shape creating a disstorted pattern. Mossberg does not recomend anything other than lead out of the origanal acu-full or the new acu-mag(X-factor) choke tubes. I recently purchased a new 835 with the 20'' barrell and the X-factor choke and quickly learned from mossberg 's service staff that it is NOT hevi-shot compatable. There is a ton of aftermarket chokes to choose from. I went with the jellyhead by primos and shooting the winchester X-tended shells. Mossberg also recomends not to use a choke tighter than .690 when shooting Hevi-Shot.

Hey bgary...I have a moss. ultimag 835. I shoot a kicks choke in it W/ win.#5's. Excellent!!!! I shot a 28# tom last year @ 47yds. He had a 9 1/2 inch beard and 1 inch spurs. I love my gun but the recoil is a bit much. I've heard from alot of people they got rid of their 835 for this reason. The only time I really notice the recoil is when were sighting in. GOOD LUCK!!!!:)

I also have this gun and like it alot.
the recoil is a bit much when shooting 3 1/2's but i dropped down to 3 inch shells and found it much more managable.
i've had the factory chock in there i think but i bought a primos jelly head for this season. i've yet to install it, but i will in a few weeks when it gets a little closer to the season.

i've got turkey on the brain this week it seems.

i also just bought one of those buck wing bobin head hen's.. i was disappointed with it when i got it out of the box. i dont think it will work very well at all.

anyways.. i like my mossberg alot.
