I havent done much hunting besides deer and squirrel.. I have seen alot of turkey in my area lately and planned on bagging one in april. How is the turkey activity in april? Is it legal to bate turkey on private land?

Last question first, it is not legal to bait turkey on private OR public land.
Turkey activity is outstanding in April since that month covers most of the breeding season when gobblers are most vocal.
As for "any tips", I would say find someone who has some experience and tag along. If you go alone, use decoys and complete camo, avoid movement, don't overcall, be patient, spend as much time as possible in areas where you know there are turkey.

Turkeys mate in the spring, that is when you will see them strutting, and hear them gobbling. No it is not legal to bait turkeys during or 30 days before a turkey season anywhere in ky. Some advice is talk to as many turkey hunters as you can, watch movies, read books, and magazines, research on the internet, learn to call; and be ready to become an addict. I promise you that once you start turkey hunting, you will never quit. You might even like it more than deer hunting or squirrel.

definately read "the truth" by cuz strickland. it is a very good book for both the hunting tips and advise, as well as all the funny stories that he shares throughout. most public libraries carry it, so it shouldnt be hard to find. check the library for other books on the subject as well...you'de be suprised what you can find.

Find someone you trust that hunts turkeys and tag along with them this season. Pay attention to their every move, and learn from their successes as well as their mistakes.

i'm gonna give u some of the best turkey hunting advice u will ever get from anyone. scout HARD before the season opens, not JUST 1st thing in the morning, but also around 10-12 in the am and in the afternoons too. DON'T GET CLOSE enuff to be seen, just close enuff to monitor the action. after u find a couple of spots where u ARE CERTAIN turkeys (gobblers hopefully, but hens won't hurt u either - nothing better than a live decoy ;) )like to be, make sure u set up there BEFORE they get there, and be patient. u won't even have to call much (if at all).
if u find a spot that 1 or 2 turkeys like to strut in around 9-11am, u have found a strut zone. if left alone, turkeys will frequent that spot, sometimes MORE than once a day. GO THERE and be patient.....
AND DON'T FORGET TO POST THE PICS :) . hope this works out for ya, let us know, R

The best advise for a beginner is to find an experienced turkey hunter and learn from him. One day in the woods with a good turkey hunter will put you years ahead of the game.
