after the rains i decided that i would get out early looking for mushrooms didnt find a single one...but did take full camo and my mouth calls just in case.....
as i was walking the hillsides i kept hearing a turkey gobble at my foot steps....i couldnt take it anymore i sat down and let loose with a few yelps.....GOBBBBBBBBLE GOOOOBLE ...
then out of the blue i heard a jake caulkin (its a jakes yelp)
deeper in tone then a hen and usually 3-4 notes...
it made me wonder if the jakes were the gobbling birds
(dont ever let anyone tell you a jake wont gobble like a long beard if they do they havent hunted much)
well i hear a gobbler on the ridge behind me and suddenly i see
4 jakes appear they were clucking caulkin... so i figured that they was the bird i was hearing
i purred lightly they strained their heads looking for the hen
then i hear PFFFFFTAAAAAAUMMMMMM PFFFFFFFTAUUUM
i was like UH OH gobbler is near....then i see him come waltzing into the woods....he was wondering what the jakes were seeing....didnt take long beard long to know something was a midst
he headed out walking steadily....the jakes wouldnt leave...i sat there finally they looked away i took a stick and pitched in the air to make it appear a limb fell from the tree
they took to the wing and landed right above me in a tree ....
i wish this year i would have kept notes of what days gobbling was more intense...i did come to the conclusion that heat/humidty shuts them down.....
i love those days that its chilly in the am 40 ish and warms up near lunch time
or a rainy day that pours then sun pops out quickly...
OH never did find a single mushroom but then again i was distracted....
