Ok, id like to hunt turkey this spring, but I dont have anything to start with.

I have a gun (12ga Benelli Nova) that I bought for waterfowl and hopefully expanding to Turkey.

I dont have any camo, calls, optics, nothing.

My gun is finished in Advantage Timber.

So if you guys could, give me links and ideas for camo and the such. id like as affordable as possiable. thanks a bunch

buy you a 3-d leafy suit to go over your camo you use for ducks or just over your regular clothes. also your nova will work just fine get you a turkey choke tube and some boxes of defferent turkey shells and head out back with some targets and shoot a while to see how your gun likes different loads. you will have to learn to call. dont be afraid to try new calls most of them are easyier to us than they look. and have fun, sit still and have a ball.

I have a thread on page 2 that is for newbies. It is titled "Thread for the newbies...". It has all the things you'll need to know.

All of the above is a personal preference and I am sure everyone will give you theirs. So here is mine. My first year was last year. I had Mossy Oak bibs and long sleeve shirt, rubber boots, face mask and hat. I had 1 slate, 1 box call, 1 decoy. I used a winchester 1100 with a modified choke, 2 3/4 #5's and I killed my first tom. It really isn't a matter of what you hunt with as it is how you hunt with it. My advice is get some calls and practice. I like Primos Mastering the Art of Spring Turkey Hunting. Informative and you can listen to them call. All the other stuff is just preference.

I would recomend you buy some light weight clothes and just pick out a pattern you like. Turkeys won't care. Also get yourself an xtra full turkey choke. Again, for a beginner any brand will do as long as it is designed for your gun. You can get some good ones for $20. Next you need shells. 3' # 5's will serve you well. Buy a turkey load, not just any box of shells. Be sure to shoot the loads some before the season so you can determine you max distance and also if the gun shoots where you point it. After that you need some calls. Start out with a slate call and a box call. Go ahead and get some mouth calls and start practicing, but there is no reason why you have to be able to use them by this season. with the slate and boxcall Learn to yelp well then master cutts and clucks. You'll be good to go. More turkeys have been killed with a few simple yelps than any other type calling. You'll need a good way to carry xtra shells, water, and calls. There are many vest and fanny packs available, just remeber the more pockets the better. A vest is one of those purchases you'll make one time and hopefully use it for along time. Once you start hunting you will probably become addicted and start quite the call collection so you'll need a place to carry them all. A couple more things I'd get to start out with would be an owl call and a crow call. These are probably the 2 most effective locator calls out there. I'd say if you get these few things and have a good place to go that there is no reason why you couldn't kill a turkey this year. Good luck

You need a good seat or cushion to sit on too . The more comfortable you are the less you'll move . And as most have said have a lot of patience.

That seat is a good idea. Your best bet would be to hook up with someone you trust that has experience turkey hunting and let them show you the "ropes". My father taught me when I was young, and he still teaches me new things to this day. The time spent with family and friends out in the hunting woods is the best times of your life, use them to your advantage.

one other important thing would be to make sure you have a place that has turkeys to hunt......Makes the time go by a bit faster!

maxcam one other important thing would be to make sure you have a place that has turkeys to hunt......Makes the time go by a bit faster! I knew there was something about turkey hunting that I was forgetting. Believe me if they aren't there wouldn't matter who was calling they wouldn't come in.
