I was wondering if anyone knew of a place around here that would be nice to take our JROTC battalion on. We're looking for places that can be very long hikes and overnight camps. Thanks

Lil GSP,
Get a good map of the Red River Gorge. You can choose trails as short as 1 mile or as long as 20. Camping is prohibited within so many feet of the trail, but as long as you obey the rule and don't trash the place up, you can camp about anywhere. If you live in Lex, it's just about an hour's drive south of you on the Mountain Parkway between Stanton and Campton. Get the map first before you make any plans. If you look, I'm pretty sure you'll find a good map on one of the state websites.
Good luck. Sounds fun.

First, Where is around here? If you are willing to drive down here to Whitley Co., the Moonbow trail that starts at Cumberland Falls State Park and follows the river to end at Noes Dock is a good one. If I remember correctly it is around 14 miles long. It's maintained by the Forest service and there is a small shelter house midway at the mouth of Bark Camp Creek. Very beautiful country and perfect for an overnight trip. Just remember to bring 2 vehicles and leave one at the dock. If you time it right in the spring, you can trout fish in both Bark Camp and Dogslaughter Creeks. Both are stocked in the spring. Plenty of Turkeys in that country too. Wow, what an idea! Thanks for bringing it up lil gsp! You might PM cobbhunts if you are interested in this one. He and some of his military buddies have hiked it several times.:)

Depending how long of hike your looking at,but for plenty of mileage Sheltowee Trace trail runs through D.Boone National Forest from Tennessee to Fleming county.Pine Mountain trail is open all the way through I believe (well over a 100 miles of beautiful scenery) and the Big Southfork has alot of room to roam also.

Rock Creek in MrCreary County is a wonderful place to camp, hike, and fish for trout.

That'd be great. I need all the info I can get on Sheltowee Trace, so I can present it to the booster club!

I was just going to mention Rock Creek as soon as I seen a post on Daniel Boone National Forest and Big South Fork. Rock Creek is beautiful. It runs into the Big South Fork and is surrounded by Daniel Boone National Forest. There is great places to camp next to creek or you can camp at Bell Farm. I go every year in Spring and can't wait this year.

I would go to LBL, get your backcountry camping permits and hike the north/south trail for as far as you want to hike it. You can camp at many backwoods campsites along the lakes, and the trail is long enought that you can plan it out according to what you want to see. It is a horse trail, so it should be plenty big enough for your troop, and you will get plenty of exercise.

Thank you Doyle, I got the info today! But the booster club as decided that they wouldnt want to go on an over night and instead have a day trip and do character building stations instead. Then maybe over the summer we will do the trail event!

1st time poster (but longtime looker) here. :)
Looks like I'm a bit late for your current trip... but for planning the next one I thought I'd pass on a little info. Between the wife and son we've made several of the trips and locations mentioned by the other folks (can't go wrong with the Sheltowee or LBL). We've got a few pictures and trip reports on a little web page (http://bellsouthpwp2.net/s/r/srose628/index.htm)that you might enjoy.
Have fun!
